I tried to install Norton on a family members computer and it wouldn't allow me. It kept on saying that "an unauthorized user is trying to access it". This would happen when the desktop opens. I can move the error message and run a live update which is what they suggest, but that still doesn't work. After the error message it gives you no other option but to press ok. Then another error comes up pertaining to the registry. I forgot to write it down. I will post it this afternoon, then it say "Please uninstall and reinstall this program". Then the only thing you can do is press ok and the computer will reboot everytime. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times ran the update. I wonder if it has a virus?

Cindy:

Try to do this:

1) Remove all the norton applications
2) Reboot the machine
3) Use Regclean (fix all the registry errors)
4) Reboot again
5) Use Regedit ( be careful)
5-1) Make a backup of your registry
5-2) Remove entries with references to Norton and Symantec
6) Reboot your machine. If there is a problem restore from the backup of your registry
7) Run regclean again (fix all the registry errors)
8) Reboot
9) Install Norton

Be careful with the step 5 (editing the registry).
This solution worked always with my PC

I hope you'll solve it.

You know that if you loose add/remove programs windows will not let you uninstall programs. I tried to uninstall NAV 2002 and would not let me. Thanks for the symantec link. As for the link I left for 2004 beta, good luck , it installed ok but could not open up control panel, I now have to try and uninstall Norton Utilities. As for now I am staying with AVG, have used it for years, on my other 2 systems, now on all 3 pc,s.

I scanned this pc with NAV online and it picked up 3 viruses. I guess Norton doesn't catch everything!

Sorry wrong one I meant RAV and it picked up 1 virus and 3 infected files. I'm so disappointed in Norton! [sad]

Cindy1; I now use AVG on all 3 of my machines and do an online scan on all every week. I also now use Spybot and AdAware. My switch firewall is not the best so I am in search of a firewall. Have used Sygate, Zone alarm, Outpost, Norton internet security., Mcafee, and have had trouble with all of them at one time or another. Zone Alarm was by far the worst, took days to uninstall and get back online. Another real problem area;SPAM:::::::::::

Any antivirus package will only do a good job if you keep it uptodate with the virus signature updates, AND then if you run regular scans. If you notice that your antivirus program is no longer running in the background or shutting off after a few minutes then you have a problem. No antivirus vendor can provide protection against specific viruses before the viruses have already started spreading. If you are in the first wave you are out of luck no matter what brand of AV you have. Most antivirus vendors have a response to a new virus in under 24 hours which is pretty good. However viruses like Bugbear and Bugbear B are around the world within a few hours of their initial release. As they will turn off all installed antivirus programs if they infect your PC, you will be left with no protection. In defense of Nortons I have found it the best at removing infections - AVG and the like sometimes have trouble removing even simple viruses. It also checks emails on there way out, so if an infection does get past then after the next update it will pick up any infected e-mail going outwards rather than having to wait for the next sytem scan to detect its presence.

The biggest hassle with Nortons is that if the install goes wrong it can be messy to clean up and reinstall. I have had to do this a few times and this is my manual method - try control panel method first.

Delete the following folders:
C:\program files\symantec
C:\program files\norton antivirus
C:\program files\common files\symantec
C:\windows\application data\symantec
(or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec for XP).

Then open the registry and delete:
HKLM\software\symantec and Norton antivirus
HKLU\software\symantec if it is present.

Run Regclean if available (but is not essential)
Reboot and re-install. Rarely it may still give script errors, but uninstalling through the control panel rebooting and reinstalling will now work.
I have tried the uninstall tool but it doesnt solve all the problems.

Nortons also uses a lot of resources so older machines struggle under its weight (but this is in common with others like Mcaffee etc..).
