Yes, depending on the OS version it will likely have trouble migrating from one system to the next unless both systems have identical hardware (with the exception of the consumer versions of XP).
I just want to replace my current hard drive, because I think it is starting to fail. It will be on the same system. I wanted to make sure that it would copy all my files and the Windows Operating System. I didn't know if I would have to install Windows on the new hard drive prior to copying my old drive to the new drive.
A Norton Ghost image would work well in this case (i.e. chaning of hard drives while everything else remains the same).
The good thing here is that if you were running XP, you probably don't even have to re-register the software (i.e. XP).
I have a question though: my copy of Ghost is old, and only allows me to make images that are < 2G. I believe this is a DOS limitation. Do you know if the new versions of Ghost have this limitation also?
Any version of Ghost that comes with Norton Systemworks 2001 and later will not have that limitation.
Mr20,
Keep in mind that when you purchase a new "retail" drive, a utility will come with it that can do the cloning for you. Also, many manufacturer websites (like ones from WD or Maxtor) have this software available for download. Ghost will also do the job fine. You should have no trouble.
