I have installed NAV on an NT network, uninstalled McAfee Netsheild on all clients, then pushed NAV out to clients. Now most of the NT Workstation machine will not reboot. Error message "The Windows application cannot respond to the end task request..." with Explorer.exe in the window title. Also, we are periodically experiencing EXTREMELY slow logins, like 2 hours or more with CPU usage at 100%. This normally occurs when a Microsoft product is updating the user profile, like a new user getting Internet Explorer set up.

If I uninstall Norton, the problems go away so I don't think this is a "reinstall Windows" issue. Does anyone have a clue what is going on?

P.S. So far, noone on the NAV forum or Symantec web site has a clue...

Ensure that NAV is not configured to scan network drives on the workstation. Also ensure that the page file is configured as an exclusion to be scanned.

I gave it a try...no fix. I also stopped scanning floppies on shutdown, excluded scanning Explorer.exe, and ran the latest sevinst.exe from Norton...still no fix.

I can un-install Norton and re-install Netshield and the machines work perfectly. Pull Netshield off, put Norton back and all of the problems return.

I know what you are thinking....but HQ says I have to run Norton.

Are you running an Internal LuUpdate server in FTP or Lan service mode? If so, try suspending the server while loggin on a machine.

Where is nortons configured to get its updates (liveupdt.hst)?

Try disabling the autoprotect and def update functions on a boot, see what happens.

Have you any traffic at ports on your server / firewall that should not be there?

Which version of Nortons server / client are you running?

Actually, this is a known problem with our version of NAVCE. Norton has offered a new build.

Thanks for your help...

I too am having the exact same problem with NAVCE 7.5 on NT workstation 4.0 sp6a. rtvscan.exe spikes up to 100%. By disabling Realtime protection I was able to get in. As soon as the protection is enabled...forget about it...everthing locks up.
What new build version did the mighty gods at Norton say they had for this fix??And do you have to request for it??

I appreciate any feedback

Actually, we tried the latest build as Norton advised and the problem did not go away.

The problem seems to be worste on older Compaqs, however, we have Dells doing it also. I have even noticed a brand new IBM Thinkpad popping up a "Shut Down" box for Explorer just before shut down. It happens quickly so you have to be paying attention. This only started after NAVCE was loaded.

I hope someone who works on this product at Norton is reading this thread. I am now advising contacts to stay away from Norton products unless thay enjoy headaches and gripey users.

Is it possible that when u pushed it out over the network, it is somehow scanning from over the network.

I've pushed out some installations over the network, but after that, its only connection with the server is to get updates.

This may sound silly but we had a "similar" problem with new PC's coming with Norton. We uninstalled Norton but either forgot to do it on a couple of PC's or the uninstall wasn't complete. We then installed McAfee because that is what we use for our client protection. Both programs (Norton/McAfee) had a turf war and the system would not boot until one was completely removed. This may not be the case in your circumstance but I figured I would throw this out just in case.

Good Luck,

Dom

Make sure that you have diabled real time protection on all pcs, and that you do not check floppies on boot or shutdown. The easy way is to do it through the SSC. Also, where is your primary server? I made the mistake of setting my pc to the primary server for update purposes, and it killed my speed. When you installed the NAV Client on your boxes, did you check the managed option, or the unmanaged. Hopfully it was the managed. Then all operations would be controled throught the SSC (ie, no scan at boot or shut down.) I am going to do a little diggin and see what I can come up with. I have NAVCE 7.6 and nothing but happy with mine.

OK, just to catch everybody up on the details:

We also ran into the McAfee/Norton problem. You HAVE to reboot after removing either product before installing the other (this actuall makes sense).

All of the clients were pushed/managed. We have machines connecting to both primary and secondary servers. I've tried disabling floppy, stopping real-time, and stopped scanning network drives.

Norton acknowledged the problem, but their "new build" solution did not work.

I sure hope somebody finds a fix for this...I am at my wits end! My users have just gotten used to waiting 15 minutes to shut down because of the "shut down" boxes that keep popping up. Most have learned to leave their PCs running and logged in 24/7.

After installing Norton on an NT Workstation machine, try installing (or reinstalling) the latest NT Service Pack--
(SvcePk 6a) on the workstation.
