Everytime I startup my computer the yellow norton symbol pops up in the tray bar with the red X covering it. I click it and it brings up a page saying that 2 things need to be fixed and one being "Protection Update Problem" and "Spyware Definitions Problem". I click next to fix and it brings up liveupdate, liveupdates downloads 18 different catalog files and then takes a minute to process and then liveupdates is finished and it brings me back to the main norton window which still has the X and asks to fix now. I've rebooted and shut down and everytime it asks me to fix and I've had this version of norton for a little less than a year and no problem. I do not have any other kind of spyware program running and my internet connection is just find. I just had a little window pop up saying that the last time Liveupdate has ran is 03/07/08 which is completely wrong because I have been running multiple times everyday to fix this problem which will not fix. Can someone tell me what to do?

Hi Clover,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team replying to your post. This behavior can be caused by incorrect system settings, corrupted files or it could be an infection on your computer.

The first thing I would suggest, is that you make sure that your system date and clock are set correctly. Try toggling the time zone and make sure to click the "Apply" button.

The next step would be to use the Norton Intelligent Updater to update your program and definition files. Please follow the instructions in the link below to download the Intelligent Updater.

Update Definition Files with the Norton Intelligent Updater

After you run the Intelligent Updater, please run a Full System scan on your computer to make sure there are no infections.

Please let me know if this fixes the LiveUpdate issue.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi, I checked the clock and settings and even clicked that link for the Intelligent updater but after running it a window poppped up saying nothing can be done because I'm not running windows 98, 2000 or xp. I'm running vista and the same problem is still happenening. Live update keeps popping up saying it hasn't been run since 3/7/08 so i'm guessing that's whenever something was changed since I have run update everyday since then.

Hi Clover,

It appears that your installation may have become corrupt. A proper uninstall and reinstall of Norton should fix this issue.

First, can you please let me know what Norton product and version you have installed? Please reply back to this thread with the product and version you are using so that i can provide you with the proper steps to uninstall and reinstall your Norton product.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Clover,

Thank you for the clarification of your Norton product. Please follow the steps below to properly remove and reinstall Norton AntiVirus 2007.

1. Use the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel and remove Norton AntiVirus and Symantec LiveUpdate.

2. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

Norton removal Tool and instructions

3. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

4. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall Norton AntiVirus. Towards the end of the installation process, the LiveUpdate feature will automatically run and download and install updates to both the program files and definition files.

After you have successfully reinstalled Norton AntiVirus, open the application and check the date on the signature files. If the date is not current , please manually run LiveUpdate, possibly multiple times, until it says that all updates have been applied.

Please let me know if your installation was successful and if the dates are correct as well.

Thanks,
Mike
