I just had a live update for Norton 2003 (1/7/2004) and now Microsoft Word is extremely slow in opening. Run Virus Scan is showing in the lower left corner of the screen. Eventually it will open, but any advice on how to fix this response problem? Five other computers all started doing this today. Thanks, Cyndee

The problem is with the Office plugin in the latest software update from Norton.

The workaround is to disable the Office plug-in by going into Norton Anti-Virus->Options->Miscellaneous and unchecking the appropriate checkbox.

If you encounter problems getting to this point (i.e. lockups, Norton wont load, etc), in Windows XP/2000, you can boot into safe mode and make this change without Norton's services loaded. However, in Windows 98/Me, this doesn't seem to work, not to mention that trying to uninstall will also fail. Completely disabling Norton will make a Windows 98/Me box usable, yet unprotected.

We only had a couple of Windows 98 boxes in our office and they were running on old hardware anyways, so we're just going to replace them.

I think Norton really screwed themselves this time. Have fun!

Thanks for the quick response. However, I did that, didn't make any difference. Even after I restarted the computer, did not make any difference. Still crawling. Try again?

Hey falcontx....

Thanks for the tip. It worked like a charm on all my Win2k machines. What a nightmare ......

Same problem happen to all my W2k systems. All word, excel program & files open very slow. But at least I know where the problem came from. thanks.

I'm glad this problem is being exposed.
Is there a NAV forum? I tried the NAV NG, but there isn't allot of activity there.
Hopefully Symantic is aware of this issue.

Yes, after working on 50 machines!!!! I found that turning off the office plugin on most machines helps alleviate the slowdown on outlook, word, excel. On a few it didn't. I simply uninstalled norton, liveupdate, etc..., and problem is gone.

However, on all the machines, norton itself is still slow too launch. If the article about the ssl certificate is correct, I'm just going to wait until this problem is resolved, and then I'll reload norton on those machines.

So, if you have to, uninstall norton, just educate all users that there is not virus scanner temporarily.

Also got the same problem, manually updated with 1/7/04 signature file didn't help to solve.

Found that the problem seems only happening on w9x machines, w2k & wxp don't have similar case.

Just wondering what's the risk to turn off NAV's "office plug-in"? Is that means if office documents got infected, system won't notify when that document is being opened?

Many thanks!!

Actually after dealing with a lot of computers today, I can say that it does affect 98, 2000, and XP. Seems to be that the PCs that are newer, faster, and with a clean/fresh OS tend to not be as affected as others that have been in production awhile.

The office plug-in is a scanning function designed specifically for office documents. It is better equipped (allegedly), to detect viruses in compressed files, and those viruses that get embedded in office files. Disabling it does not mean the files will not be scanned when opened (contrary to what you might read on the web), but you are lowering your protection just a bit. Norton scans every file accessed by every process executed on your system, including those processes executed by the user (such as opening a document). I wouldn't worry too much about it.
