Nortel's SIP implementation

Hi,

I just have a simple question regarding Nortel and their SIP implementation. As far as I know SIP does only work with IP telephones, isn't that correct?

How do you then, in SIP, make a call from an IP telephone to a normal analoge telephone? Not an IP phone, but a phone connected to the Nortel PBX?

Nortel does not use SIP for IP phones. It use a proprietary UNISTEM protocol.

If an IP phone calls a nonIP destination voice goes through a special PBX card - a gateway. A gateway card converts IP pockets to traditional TDM streem and vice versa. After this an analoge line card converts a digital TDM signal to analoge.

Ahh, ok - but the new version support SIP, right? I have tested it with the signalling server and it says it supports SIP. Does that mean I can send SIP requests to the signalling server/PBX and use SIP for controlling phones and other devices?

The "new version" (now CS 1000 5.0) supports SIP signaling to other systems (another CS 1000, Microsoft,..) as well as SIP phones.

Nope what 3tdp33ler said stands. SIP is used for the virtual trunks to other systems on the network. The phones use unistem. The main difference between Rls 4.5 and 5 for the SIP is that the NRS in 4.5 is a redirect server and in 5 is a proxy server.

Nope what I said also stands. Fully agree that Nortel IP Phones use Unistim. But you can utilize SIP phones supplied by 3rd parties (

OK, so I cannot use my SIP phone, connect it to a Nortel PBX (CS 1000 5.0) and call a phone on the PBX?

By the way, I am asking all of these questions because I am thinking of writing my own, very simple virtual switchboard.

If you check Nortel website you will see that a SIP firmware is available, this is that you can use these as SIP phones on a MCS5100.

You can already now in Rls 4.5 use third party SIP devices, but be careful, SIP is not SIP. If the third party phones need a proxy then forget with Release 4.5. Release 5 should make it, as the NRS will change from Redirect to Proxy.

I am already using SIP ATA and other SIP Gateways. Currently I am testing a SIP GSM Gateway, but I did not get it working yet. As it does not register to the CS1K.

And Microsoft Thing (Unified Communications) work on Release 4.5 already it is based on SIP Trunks and on SIP CTI (TR87).

What type/ vendor sip set are you try to use? you can use SIP softphones downloaded free of the net which we now have fully working in a lab on Rls 5, but the other posts are right Nortel IP sets use Unistim, & only use sip/h323 protocals when communicating between CS1k's (sig ser) or 3rd party end points

Remember if it doesn't work hit it harder
