I have basically been put into the postion of managing our phone system. I have tried to pick up things here and there with basic moves, changing names and so forth. Well the past weekend a major change took place and everyone's cubs were moved. I was here all weekend trying to move phones. Some to existing extensions, others to places that weren't even punched down. I have been wanting to learn how to build a phone but it looks overwhelming to me. We have a phone that I cant figure out how to move... Anyways.. I have been given permission to look for training but I have till Friday for them to pay. Anyone know of a good place to get Meridian training in the Detroit area???? Also I found a place that will come to your business and train you. It is the iGen group. Anyone know of them and if they are good?

I wouldn't recommend anything but Nortel (Global Knowledge) bought their training some years back. Any chance they would let you go to Richardson, TX and take Database for Technicians??

Please post the phone or any info you have on the one you can't move. This is the place to be. Hang in there and don't be afraid to ask. Glad to help.

BoneDaddy's was great but I also like to sneak down to Duncanville for some O'Dell's BBQ brisket plate with hot beans white bread. (I think it was O'Dell's - it was Webb's when I worked there in high school 20something years ago)

Enough about food, Sal33n needs some help. ;-) (25th anniversary of emoticon today. See cnn.com)

Anyway, there are a few ways to move and/or build phones. Largely personal preference, confidence, time, good records factor into the decision. You can throw the pairs if you know where each phone is punched down on your frame (like where I used to be). If not, (like where I am now), you have to tone out every pair. In that case, I throw pairs if there are no programming changes involved. If there are changes, I print the TNB first, then out and rebuild the phone most of the time.

Building a phone isn't so bad. A lot of the settings are default settings. Then you just tailor them to the needs of your facility, program a few keys, and it all works. If I find out how to post a xls file here, I can share the standard programming I use in the CLS. Or I could post a sample TNB.

Folks here will always help: John Poole, Bid Indian, Nortellian, etc.

Thanks for the responses. When I get into work tomorrow I will post the details of the problem I am having! thanks again!

You have the option of using a GUI administration tool to get you started. There are a number available in the market, such as TM & OTM from Nortel, and PhoneMaster from Phoneware (

Never heard of iGen for TM training. eTEL, ISI, and Avotus and the major players out there besides Global Knowledge. eTEL has the best reputation for service quality and price and those guys would come to your place.

Just out of curriosity, why doesn't Nortel make training easy to get? Sadly, they won't let me go to Texas.

Not sure if they still do but they use to have a place I beleive in New Jersy or somewhere up North. You can also get the Computer Based Training or Live WEB Training, they are actually pretty good to get started. Also check out the link below they have some basic things there that might help you.

Parsippiny, NJ LaPalma ,CA, Richardson, TX
