Does anyone know of steps to change software in the M series sets when they have a low receive problem? Many years ago Nortel advertised a series of keystrokes for a general transmission problem on these sets, but I cannot find them now.
The steps were quite involved and had a warning to follow the steps EXACTLY or other problems could occur since these steps actually changed settings in the software for the set.

Any help or direction to a source of help will be greatly appreciated. I have 5 M7100 sets with low receive. TX is fine.

Thank you

Norstar Set Volume
Also see MICS 2.0 Maintenance Release WI 5.7 ITAS SRN-009

In late 1994, Norstar introduced the 0X32 KSU with MICS 1.0 software. With the introduction of the MICS 1.0 software, a new feature was implemented called 'Receiver volume'. This feature is also available in all subsequent software releases of the MICS product as well as the CICS 1.0 and CICS 2.0 products.

The 'Receiver volume' feature is accessed within the Norstar Configuration programming. It is used to specify whether the volume level of the handset receiver or headset will return to the system level, (Use system volume), when a call is disconnected or put on hold, or will retain the level the user determined with the volume bar (Use set volume).

As stated in the Installation Guide for all of the above products, this feature is not available on some older Norstar telephone sets.

The purpose of this TIP is to state which release of telephone set is required for this feature to work. The following is the minimum release telephone set required for the 'Use set volume' feature:

M7100 - All releases
M7208 - Release 16
M7310 - Release 16
M7324 - Release 05

The release number of the set can be determined by looking at the white label on the bottom of the telephone set.

In addition, there was a change in the nominal setting of the 0X32 KSU compared to the 8X24 KSU, i.e., the default volume of a telephone set is lower on the 0X32 KSU. The purpose of this change was to address a FCC regulatory issue in which the default volume of the 0X32 needed to be lowered to meet the level requirements for headset users.

Can you please tell me where to find ITAS SRN-009?

I searched the NortelNetworks site for it, but we all know how successful any search is on their site, don't we?

It probably is not what I am looking for but any possibility is at least, hopeful.

It is none of the other things you mentioned. I am familiar with all of those system options etc. This is a trouble in the set itself where the transmit volume is fine but receive is extremely low. It is nothing to do with the system connected to or any S/W rls of systems. It is inside the set. The set can be taken to any system and any release of S/W & the trouble still exists (of course) because it is in the set.

The reason I am trying to find the commands to alter the set S/W is that this is not just 1 set in trouble. Many of the older M7100 sets are now exhibiting this problem on many systems. If it was only 1 or 2 I would just replace the sets.

This is a S/W problem inherent to these sets and can be resolved by the commands if I can locate them.

Thanks again to anyone who can assist with this.

Nortel will no longer no longer provide free replacement.

MICS 2.0 Maintenance Release WI 5.7 ITAS SRN-009 April 1, 1998
On September 29, 1997, Norstar enhanced its product portfolio with the introduction of MICS 2.0. MICS 2.0 software is compatible with the 0X32 KSU and its key main feature is the support of BRI ISDN. MICS 2.0 was introduced with software version 4.5.

In November 28, 1997, there was an upissue to the MICS 2.0 software stream. This new software was MICS 2.0, software version 5.1.

MICS 2.0, software version 5.1, offered the following performance enhancements.

Upgrade from MICS 1.0 to MICS 2.0
With software version 4.5, it was necessary to perform an intermediary step when upgrading from MICS 1.0 to MICS 2.0. This intermediary step was to upgrade to MICS 1.1, ie. MICS 1.0 to MICS 1.1 to MICS 2.0.

With software version 5.1, this intermediary step is no longer required. A technician will be able to go directly from MICS 1.0 to MICS 2.0.

CLID Set Prompt
With software version 4.5, the prompt for programming the set that would have automatic call info with CLID, was missing. This prompt has been corrected in software version 5.1.

A new release of MICS 2.0 was made available March 17, 1998. The new MICS 2.0 software was software version 5.5.

MICS 2.0, software version 5.5, contains the 5.1 performance enhancements as well as the following additional performance enhancements.

Volume Reset to Default
Also see ITAS Tip 166 Norstar Set Volume
Software version 5.5 ensures that the Norstar telephone handset can retain the volume selected by the volume bar after disconnecting from a call.

Service Mode Programming
Software version 5.5 ensures that Norstar can change the Ringing Group for central office lines 49 and above.

T1 E&M Trunks
Software version 5.5 corrects a situation where an incorrect message was being sent on a T1 line upon disconnect. Although not very frequent, this incorrect message could cause a system reset.

In our ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction, MICS 2.0 WI 5.7 will be in production April 14, 1998 to address the following performance enhancements. MICS 2.0 WI 5.7 contains all previous performance enhancements.

CLID lost after power cycle
This was a rare condition that occurred after a specific sequence of steps was performed in ADMIN programming and then removing the power from the KSU.

Wireless external page problems
This was a condition that occurred under certain call scenarios where the conversation of an external caller and the internal portable user, was heard over the external paging speakers.

System reset after initiating a Base Station re-eval (Canadian XC)
Robustness has been added to the code to prevent the system from getting tied up in an endless loop when performing a re-eval causing the KSU to reset.

Loss of sidetone after wireless handoffs (US XC)
This was a low occurrence condition where the C3050 user thought they were dropped from a call after a base station hand off due to the loss of sidetone. In fact, the user was still connected and able to continue with the conversation.

"Link time" prompt missing
The "Link" prompt has been added to the software as a system wide feature for all lines and trunks.

System reset when using ACD Silent Monitor (US MICS 2.0)
This was a very low occurrence condition in which the KSU would reset when the Silent Monitor option within the Norstar ACD was used.

Muted speech path on C3050 portables (Canadian XC)
This was a condition where the speech path between the portable user and the caller was dropped not allowing the conversation to continue.

MICS 2.0, software version 5.7, can be ordered using the same Ordering Codes, however, the release number on the label of the cartridge will state Rls 06. The following are the ordering codes for the MICS 2.0 software.

A0660966 - NA-MICS 2.0 Eng
A0660968 - NA-MICS 2.0 Fre

Norstar Set Voice Distortion

Nortel has determined that under specific conditions of talker levels and frequencies, transmit voice distortion can occur. This is a rare scenario and will only occur on sets manufactured since March 8, 1999. This condition can occur when a Norstar user talks loudly into the handset or when activating the Norstar Page feature. The M7410 and Norstar Conference Unit are not affected.

If you receive a call from a customer that reports distorted voice quality when speaking through the handset, and has a Norstar telephone from the list below, the following are the steps to correct the distortion problem.

WARNING: The following steps must be performed exactly as stated. Any deviation to these steps can cause irreparable changes to the Set that could cause the Set to cease functioning.

Enter the following key sequence:

Please note that this sequence may be entered while on the phone.
The correction will take affect starting on the next telephone call.

IMPORTANT: This condition is corrected in all Sets manufactured after April 30, 1999 and can be determined by an increment of 1 (one) in the Release number of the Set, eg. a Feature Set (M7310) Black manufactured after April 30, 1999, will be Release 21.

The following is a list of the affected sets by ordering number and release number.

Thank you again lugerlover. The second post was what I was looking for. Although it talks about transmit distortion, I am hoping it may reset RX/TX together and fix my low receive problem. I will try it and let you know.

Thanks again

Thanks, lugerlover. Now that Nortel has quit the m series, all the m style sets we get are refurbs, sometimes pretty old.

I haven't run into this trouble yet, but 'ya never know...
