We have Nortel 8610 switches. Two of them are used in our front end configuration, and the other is stationed in one of our buildings with Fiber Mods, for connectivity to that switch. We have loads of IPX servers. The problem that we are seeing is that, The connection keeps dropping on these servers. We could be looking at the stats on one and boom disconnect, then another, and then after we reboot the 8600, in that building some come back and others don't. Now we have STG turned off on this switch. We have had Nortel in on these problems, they have no answers for us. Does anyone have any similar problems, and if so do you have any suggestive solutions for me.

We too have had the same problems. What version of code on the switches? Are you doing protocol conversion over any MLT trunks? Are they linked with a Gig. link ?

Are you users getting attached to a server other than the preffered server?

We worked out all these problems, Nortel was not much help. HP actually was the biggest help.

Thank you for responding. You are correct as far as Nortel not being of any help. To answer your questions.

The switches are connected via gig link from floor to floor. No protocol conversion MLT at all.

The users are not getting a different server when they log on. If they can get on.

You mentioned HP. What about it? If you can give me soem things to try please le me know.

In talking to nortel the tech had be change the SAPGNS from Alphabetical to Round Robin. Accoring to them they said that Alphabetical would force the users over 1 server and that could cause the dropping. But my question was if thats the case then why are the servers dropping?

He could not answer that, he would have to consult with other engineers, so to speak.

What version of netware are you running? Also, do the netware servers have routing turned on?

What we have found is that Nortel has many problems with IPX over gig links. We had sent a sniffer trace to HP because we had problems with jet direct boxes resetting to defaults. HP found a white paper from Nortel stating that with gig links and IPX you must have only one frame type in or wan, in our case we have 802.3 on 80% of our WAN and the other 20% is mixed due to aquesitions. At the time we decided to work on getting to IP only. We have disable our gig links and have MLT 100 fast E. This is working at this time. Also we had similar problems during the beta of the 8600 an olded code had an IPX routing problem that was fixed in 3.0.1, we are currently on 3.0.3

Before we upgraded the code we had to disable MLTs to closets to get users logged in.
Are you having problems with users that are on the same segment as the 8600?

The round robin thing most likley will not work. They told us the same thing. If you look at a sniffer trace do you see the workstation getting a response from a server it should not? Is it being told by a server it has a replica when it does not?
