Hello. I have a nortel phone system. The caller ID works, but when I pick up the phone the caller info disappears and the display shows options: "Calls" "Old" "New" instead of the person you are talking to. Is there a way to keep the current caller showing in the display throughout the call? Also, when I first pick up the phone it defaluts to line one. However, if someone is on line 1 and I pick up the display reads "no line selected" instead of just going to the next available line. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks!
J. Eric

Program a button to be Feature 811 which is the caller ID feature code.

when your display says CALLS. It means you have new calls in your caller ID log. You may need to clear all the calls from the display before you can keep the current callers number on the display.

For the line defaulting to line 1 and not jumping to another line its because your sets PRIME LINE is set to LINE 1. If all your lines are in POOL A you can make your PRIME LINE: POOL A then you will always pick up your hand set and get dial tone.

Program:Terminals&Sets > line access > line assignment > prime line > change to pool A

Thank you DSI Dave. The caller ID function works now. However, I assigned the primary line to "Pool A" as you suggested, but I still get "no line selected" if I pick up the receiver when another extension is already on line 1. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Sounds like only line 1 is in pool A. Under Lines, go to each live line and change it to pool A.

Well, I have all 3 lines assigned to line pool A, yet it still acts like they are not. Is there any way to verify the settings? Thanks again for the help!

There are two intercom buttons on the phone as supplied. When pressed, the top one says Feature: 987, then Inactive Feature. The bottom one beeps and says Not Available.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

sounds like they may not really be intercom buttons

What type of phone is it and where are the intercom buttons. if its an 8 button phone they should be the bottom 2 buttons unless handsfree is turned on then its the 2 and 3 button from the bottom. if its a 16 button its the same position on the right hand side.
Press feature * 0 (ZERO) then press the buttons to see how they are programmed.
you may need to go into programming and add the intercoms

Honest officer,I know I've been thinking but i ain't thunk yet

The phone has 16 buttons on lower right and 8 buttons on upper right. It is a T7316E phone. I checked the button assignments. The bottom right button says "background music" the second from the bottom on the right says "Feature: 987", then it changes to say "Inactive feature".
I notice there is a button that says "group pickup," but I am not sure what this does.
Thanks again everyone!

I may be missing something. What about the intercom affects whether or not I can pick up the phone and have a dial tone on an available line without having to first select the line?
Thanks!

I was replying to your last post.

Assign lines to your sets as A&P
Assign lines under Telco features and set Call ID to Yes.
Put lines into Pool

If unsure of how to do the above then call in a tech.

What do you guys do? yell accross the room?

All 3 lines are assigned to line pool A. And the phone I am programming has access to line pool A, B, and C. However, when I assign Line Pool A as the prime line, the phone will not give a dial tone when you pick up unless if somebody is on line 1 unless you select line 2 or 3. It will not automatically give you the next available line. Shouldn't it do this?
Thanks again!
P.S. I have a small private dental office, and we do not sit at individual desks throughout the day, so we do not need an intercom.

ok lol

When lines are put into a pool you grab the bottom line first.

Double check the line #s...
Press Feature * 0 then a line, should say LN 001 or 002 etc.
Then double check those lines are in the pool.
Remove ALL other lines that are not used from the pool.

Lines must be assigned to Appear or A&R on a set or have an Intercom button.

See what it says on display when you pickup the handset from idle.

Hey, we are making serious progress!
I checked every thing you said, CurlyCord, and now when I pick up I start with line 003, and if someone is already on that line it picks up 002. Now the next question is, why does it do this? I want to pick up in the other order so that I start at line 001 and work my way to 003. The reason is because line 003 is used for outgoing calls when no other line is available, but it is our fax line, so I don't normally want to make outgoing calls on that line since it might cause people to return our calls and get the fax machine!
It's always something, huh?
Thanks!

It is normal to grab bottom lines out since people always call in from the top down.

You could put a fax line at the top instead as line 1, you need to move the jumpers around at the KSU.

Thanks CurlyCord. I think my solution will be to assign line 1 and 2 to pool A and assign line 3 (the fax line) to pool B. So I will automatically start with line 2 for outgoing instead of the fax line, but I can still choose the fax line for outgoing by pushing the line 3 button.
Thank you so much for everyone's help. Fantastic!
