I've been searching on the net for the past couple of weeks looking for books on Nortel PBX systems. But I cant find any. A few on networking equipment, switches and such. But no books on the Meridian 1. Does anyone know of any books on the Meridian 1, or if there is some conspiracy where no one is allowed to write them?

TIA

Also...I accidentally posted this in the nortel networking forum, so please disregard that, and if a mod would delete that post I would appreciate it.

nikeair,

Nortel has gone to all digital format for their media including the Meridian1 books. Try doing a search for the latest SERL CD which contains all of the Meridian NTP's. Also, you can get limited access to Nortel's Helmsman website to download the NTP's that you need. Go to this address
...Good luck.

Well I have all the Meridian 1 manuals, but I mean third-party books. I cant seem to find any. Looking for something that is practical training and use.

Actually this might be alot of help, thanks DanOoo. If you know of any third-party books let me know also.

Thanks again

nikeair,
I've worked on Nortel switches for years and I do not know of any third party books other than those found at Although, I am sure they are out their but are probably rare. Let me know if you have a question.

...good luck with the search.

for some reason, they just arn't out there. command line for dummies would be a best seller. but i have never seen anything close, i think most of use that sorta know this switch and forgotten how to write english, most of us can barely speak to non nortel geeks

well I started at this company last year, actually 1 year today, and for how many ever years prior they have had verizon techs out for all MACs, as you can imagine, lots of $$ with over 400 sets. Over the past year I've been put in charge of the system and learned, what I feel anyway, are most of what I'll need to do everyday stuff on the CLI as well as call pilot and symposium. I would just like to learn more so I would need verizon for less and less. One reason why our new office in a month or so is getting a RO 9150, all of our other offices have norstars right now. I'll most likely get my company to buy some of the self-pace/document stuff from globalknowledge. The documentation that dan pointed me to has been very helpful.

Thanks again

the remote office is a pain, unless you have tons on bandwidth. carrier remotes, fiber remotes or ip remotes seem to be a better solution. have you looked through the software feature guides? most of the time they can get you started at lot faster then the i/o guides.. and global knowledge is always a good idea. what a company saves on mac work will usually pay way more then the cost of training. keep up the reading and if you get stuck, we will be here..

Well we'll have a 768k cir frac t1 to the office for data and voice, only 3 sets and 2 ata's to begin with, and I'll have QoS setup on the cisco router using LLQ. I was thinking about using either G.711 or the G.729a/fax for the codec. Is there a noticeable quality difference between the two?

major difference, G.729a will sound like broadcast quality, but not with a frac t. major bandwidth requirements.. 768 is a great choice for that office, expect a voice downgrade during heavy file transfer. i used 768 for a branch bank with 6 sets and pc's.. during closing, voice was not usable.

John maybe you have an idea on this, right now we have verizon for all of our frame-relay circuits, moving to US LEC though in may when the contract is up,but right now it looks like verizon is charging us the same amount for a full t1 circuit or a frac t1, any ideas about that? Is this normal business practice, but makes no sense to me?

Smetimes you can come accross the Nortel Manuals on CD on Ebay. The Norstar ones are there all the time and since you have some Norstars it may be worth the $15, but the Meridian PBX manuals on CD only just show up once in a while. You can also buy them from your vendor or a remarketer. Much more expensive there, but a good investment if you don't already have them.

If you have a maint contract with a vendor, sometimes they will throw it in for free at contract renewal time.
