Hi,
I have a Nortel BES 1010-48T switch here that will not boot. It does power up and all the fans are running. None of the lights in the front for the ethernet port are blinking. I tried to ping the switch on it's given IP adress but no response. I connected to the switch via serial and this is the output I get when pressing r to reset/reboot the switch:

Press 'a' to run Agent code
Press 'd' to Download agent code
Press 'e' to display Errors
Press 'i' to Initialize config flash
Press 'p' to run POST tests
Press 'r' to Reset
Press 's' to display System information

Does it mean that the code is lost? or that the switch is damaged? How can I get it working again?
Any help would be apreciated.

It might be that you have a corrupt configuration. Try initialing the configuration by selecting "i";

Press 'i' to Initialize config flash

And see if it will boot after that.

Good Luck!

Hi DaddyOfThree,
Thanks for your prompt response.
I tried pressing the i command and get the following:
***********
Erase Flash:

1 - Config-1
2 - Config-2
3 - Config Selector-2

Select [ <config-1> ]:
Erase Flash? y/N [ N ]: n

Press 'a' to run Agent code
Press 'd' to Download agent code
Press 'e' to display Errors
Press 'i' to Initialize config flash
Press 'p' to run POST tests
Press 'r' to Reset
Press 's' to display System information
*****************

I just chose to not erase the flash. It's asking me to erase the flash. Should I do that? tried rebooting but same error. Any other advise?

It looks like it might have flash space for two configurations, and the current active config is "2". I would select "2 - Config-2" and see what happens.

Good Luck!

see below what happens when selecting 2:
Press 'a' to run Agent code
Press 'd' to Download agent code
Press 'e' to display Errors
Press 'i' to Initialize config flash
Press 'p' to run POST tests
Press 'r' to Reset
Press 's' to display System information

It asks me to delete the config. I'm lost.

I think you have to say "Y" to erase the flash. You're going to lose the config anyway, since more than likely it being corrupt is why the switch is not booting.

Has a jumper been put wrong by the factory?

I'd say the next thing to try is "d" to Download agent code. Download the current code from the Nortel website and put on a TFTP server that you can directly connect to the switch on the same subnet.

Failing this, it sounds like RMA time...

tried with the D option. Connected a ethernet cable to a laptop. Installed a TFTP server on the laptop and placed the image on the TFTP server, but the switch can't download the file. I think that's just because the switch is not working and none of the ports are. Switch doesn't have a seperate management ethernet port. File isn't transfereble through serial, right? In the process for an RMA but distributor doesn't respond quickly on that.
