Hi,

I was wondering how the configuration files on the Nortel 8600`s work. Understand with Cisco we have a running configuration which is the live config, and a start up configuration which is our last saved configuration, but how does this work on Nortel 8600.

We have some 8600 running some old code which have fallen over during configuration file saves, so at the moment im not able to save the configuration files but need to get a copy of the live config off. I can quite easily perform a copy config.cfg x.x.x.x:8600config however thats the last saved config, how do I copy off the current Live config? Ive tried copy config x.x.x.x:8600config and this does not work.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hi,

The running connfig on a ERS8600 can be shown by the following command:

show config

This will show you the running (live) config of the 8600. The config.cfg is the start up configuration file.
What you can do to retrieve the running config is:

1- do a 'save config' from the cli and copy the saved configuration file, default named config.cfg (look at date & time) and copy this file to wherever you want. for example: copy config.cfg /pcmcia/config.cfg.
2- do a 'show config -y' from the cli and copy this output to a text file and save it somewhere offline. You can later copy and paste it again into the ERS8600 through the cli interface if required.

Goodluck,

What is the error you are getting when you try to save the config?

"show config" gives the running config and can be cpatured in hyperterminal.

If you do a "config cli more false" this will remove the need to hit space to scroll the screen. "config cli more true" to turn screen scroll back on.

"more /flash/config.cfg" will show the startup config on the screen.

HI JeroeNortel,

thanks for that, its set it straight in my mind. Just one point of clarification, what does the -y do? I cannot see this in any of the nortel documentation? does it have the same affect as the "verbose" command ( show config verbose )?

Thanks again, Lee.

Hi Andy88

On a few occasions when we have saved the config the switch has simply rebooted ( cpu rebooted ). We are running version 3.5.1, and Nortel will not support the issue unless we upgrade, which i suspect will also fix the issue.

So im after a simple solution that does not require me to save the configuration at the moment, being a 24/7 environment its difficult to get a slot to do a save "out of hours".

Thanks, Lee.

Hi leedsit,

The -y option is not a valid command after the show config commando. You can forget about this and use the verbose command like andy mentioned earlier, to have the output in your screen without hitting a key.

As you mentioned about your reboot issue, make sure you save the running config offline. After that you probably could copy the config (by using the pcmcia card) back to the 8600 again. This ensures should the 8600 have a reboot it comes up with the latest (running) config.

SAs Nortel mentioned, the 3.5.1 code is pretty old these days and isn't covered by Nortel support anymore. You should upgrade to release 4.1 to have the latest features and fixes available (5.x is pretty new and doesn't cover all of the latest features of 4). Make sure your SF card is fitted with 256MB (like the 8292SF) to be able to run the 4.x of higher releases.
Look for the Nortel docs to make sure you have covered the recommendations before upgrading.

Regards

Probably the easiest way would be a capture of the "show config"

A couple of things you could look at.

It's possibly a memory/high cpu issue.
Do a "show sys perf" to see what you are running at.

It could also be an issue with the flash. Try copying the files off the flash then reformat it, then copy them back. It would be best to have a maint window for this.

Have you tried saving the config via device manager rather than cli?

Are you running HA with the CPU's? I know there were alot of issues in the earlier releases.

Thanks again guys,

all 13 ERS`s now fully backed up!

Cheers Lee.
