Hi All!

I just recently purchased a used Norstar 616 for my son to mess around with. I also purchased a Nortel BST door phone as well. The ad said that the door phone is compatible w/ nortel 616, however I have had no luck even entering programming mode. The instruction manual lists 3X8 systems working, but not the 6X16.It has firmware DR5. If anyone has any idea on how to get this working/if it will work, please let me know! Thank you!

First, have you followed the door phone install guide:

I have found that from power-up, the door phone unit takes longer to sync with the KSU than a standard M-series phone. You also need to be sure the KSU is programmed for the correct intercom buttons and such.

Second, if you have followed the guide, have you encountered any errors at any of the programming steps or have you looked for a menu option mentioned in the guide that does not appear when you are in programming?

I have not tried connecting it to the system yet because I was worried since it doesn't specifically say that it is compatible with the 616 that it might break the 616. Should I be concerned about this or no?

The door phone will not damage a KSU unless there were aftermarket modifications made to the unit. If it looks stock, you will be fine. The door phone will look to the KSU like it is a M7324 phone.

If you add the door opening controller, that can be a bit more involved as it requires a SAPS, but just for the door phone on a short cable run, you will not need to deal with a SAPS.

Once you connect the door phone to the KSU, it can take 5 minutes or thereabouts to sync with the KSU before you can execute any door phone progamming commands. Attach the door phone to an available DN pair.

Here is a large compatibility chart. Your door phone is listed for 616.

You're fantastic. This is going to be such a fun project for this weekend! Thank you for all of your help!

I think it will be a fun project for the two of you.

Three closing suggestions:

Consult the FAQ tab in this forum for wiring and other guides for the 616, if you are not familiar with amphenol connectors and color codes. Be very sure that you fully seat the amphenol connector.

Use a M7310 or M7324 phone so that you get the best support for softkeys and full display of programming menus/messages.

Be aware that there is more than one level of programming access, and you want to be sure to log in at the CONFIG level to get access to all menus.

Here is a 616 guide:

At the end of that pdf is a copy of the programming template worksheet which is helpful to orient you to what kind of values different menu items require.

BST is cool, they are backwards compatible on Norstar....its the older Norstar ones that wont work on BCM you are thinking of.

The 616 can't be DR 1. Door phone was not supported on the 1st version.
