I purchased a Nortel 5510-24T and it came without any documentation. Can anyone tell me how to get into this switch?

A method to reset it to base config and how to connect to it to configure it would be a big help.

Thanks

Establish a serial console session via a DB9F to DB9F straight through cable. 9600,8,N,1,None and VT100 for terminal emulation. May need to reboot to trigger the session. Once in, you will see a prompt with a menu system.
CTRL+Y gets you into main menu where you will see an option for resetting to factory defaults.
I hope this helps.

Thanks

I will try that. I was looking for a way to get in using a GUI interface, over TCP/IP. Any Recommendations?

Once you get in, you can set up an IP addy on the unit.
From that IP addy, you can manage the unit either from the Web interface or through a better tool called Java Device Manager (which can be obtained from the Nortel web site).
The Web interface isn't bad, but JDM is much better and more comprehensive tool.
I hope this is helpful.

I've never done this before, but I believe by default, the 5510 should use BOOTP to look for an address. If you have a DHCP/BOOTP server you might be able to get it to assign an IP address; once assigned you can use the web or telnet interface to access the switch.

Press the UI button for 3 seconds - you are in config mode.
Now press it 5 times - this is a command.
Press it for 3 seconds - exiting config mode.

The default IP is now 192.168.192.168.

I know this works on 4.1 code, not sure about prior versions.

I have a Nortel 5510-48T that I cannot gain access to by the console, telnet or http. Is there a way to reset any of these passwords, but still keep the configuration (VLANS)? Thank you for your help

Hey Norteldude, v 4.1 was the first version to introduce a default IP address for the box.

Aishac, I don't believe there is a way for you default the box without losing your configuraton, sorry!

Thank you HungryHouse for your response. I have actually found a way, but it is real finicky. You can use ESM(5.1) to download the ascii config. Edit this config under the CLI password section by deleting the stars after the ro/rw and putting in a password. Keep the quotations. A short password works better than long ones. Then reload the config. This can be done without taking the switch off line. I have successfully done it twice, but have failed more than a dozen times. It's worth a try since you may lose your configuration anyway.

So the SNMP community strings werent lost then?
I was going to suggest JDM or ESM, but thought you lost all access...

Sorry, I didn't mention that in the first question, but yes, I had access through ESM, but I don't think there is a way to change any passwords in there. I found out that I had a faulty keyboard and I think I used it to set the passwords originally.

Got to hate those faulty keyboards! lol.
I do have one question for ya...what was different about the two successful times vs. the 12 failures?
Let us know if you can remember. :)
-Thanks, HH

I have a theory, but it is just a theory. I was running ESM 5.0 when it worked before (even though I had failures then also) and I am running 5.1 now. It has worked before and now it is not working at all. I am going to do some more trial runs.
