Hello everyone, Any assistance with regard to this query much appreciated. I am currenly in the process of converting a Nortel 1230 IP phone from Unistim to SIP. I have set up the TFTP server (various) with the nessessary files eg the 1230.cfg file and the bin file for the firmware itself. The phone boots up and seeks to download the 1230.cfg file. On some TFTP's it will say file open error while on others it will say 1230.cfg not found. I have copied the contents of the file from online sites and the following is what is included in it.

[FW]
DOWNLOAD_MODE FORCED
VERSION SIP12x0e04.00.04.00
FILENAME SIP12x0e04.00.04.00.bin
PROTOCOL TFTP
SERVER 192.168.1.2
#SECURITY_MODE 0

The file is created in notebook and saved as the following 1230.cfg

For some reason the phone is unable to either open or access the ontents of the file. Does the file need to be saved in a certain format or does anyone have a cfg file for 1230 which they have used and worked OK. Even tried doing the same process but to upgrade unistim firmware but no joy. the correct TFTP address is configered in phone as it speaks to TFTP server

any help appreciated please

From the Tech Bulletin 127

I recommend reading all of chapter 2.4, but here is what you asked for:

2.4.3. Enable 12xx Telephone on IP Office

NOTE:
• New 1220/1230 IP sets should have latest BCM6.0 level Unistim and initially loads up BootC upon Power up.
• 1220/1230 IP sets previously used in BCM will require Unistim FW upgrade to BCM6.0 level and will need to load BootC (by pressing 2 and UP key upon Power up.

Connect 12xx Telephone Using DHCP
This is similar to the 11xx, but you first need to manually configure the IPOffice/HTTP Server address.
• Connect the 12xx telephone into a PoE port.
• Set DHCP option on the terminal
• The phone will boot and ask if you want Manual Configuration?
• Press the 4 buttons under the LCD left to right one after the other :
OK Auto BkSpc Clear
• It will display DHCP 0=N 1=Y
• Select 1 for DHCP
• Use the Scroll down key to get to “Provision Server”
• It will display “0.0.0.0” – press the backspace key to clear then populate using the IP Address of the IP Office (e.g. 192.168.43.1)
• Press “OK”
• Displays DNS – Press “OK”
• Press “Apply”
• The Phone will reboot and update the IP Phone with SIP FW configuration derived from the IP Office.
• It will now go through the process to load files the same as the 11xx as described above.

Kind regards

Gunnar

Hi Gunnar

Firstly thanks for your reply. Maybe this is a bit misleading but the IP 1230 I have will not be connected to an IP Office. The reason I posted in this forum as I have in other Nortel related forms is to let as many see my post where possible who would be technically familiar.

The files which need to be sent to the phone is coming from a TFTP server like TFTP32 etc. What you have described above I have already set on the phone. The problem is that the phone does not seem to read the 1230.cfg file regardless if its to upgrade the unistim to latest version or convert to SIP. The phone does communicate with the TFTP server but is unable to open the file. The error message I receive comes up on the TFTP log, not the phone

thanks again

Here is a BIG trick. Even though you are trying to convert SIP to Unistim you have to trick the desired Unistim 1230.cfg file to actually read 1230SIP.cfg Once the TFTP server reads the disguised Unistim file, it will then go through the update process and convert the phone to Unistim.

Thanks Joe for your response

Its actually the other way about. I am trying to convert Unistim to SIP and and the problem would seem to be that the phone is unable to read the 1230.cfg file from the tftp server. I have tried various servers. Messages received on the tftp server have included error opening file or file not found. I wonder if the 1230.cfg needs to be saved in a certain format or created using a certain programme. If I could find a 1230.cfg file already created for conversation to SIP and that worked that might help

Thanks again

Hello pabx1121

i had this exact same problem, created the config file as you have above in notepad and saved it as .cfg - but, notepad automatically saved it as the following file:

1140e.cfg.txt

(in my case i was converting 1140's to SiP for a lab experiment)

notepad saved it with a .txt file extension, hence the phone not being able to find the file when it attempts to download it from the TFTP server.

solution was to rename the file using the DOS prompt and the 'rename' command.

open a DOS/ CMD window on whatever PC/server you are using as a TFTP server and use the CD/ command to navigate to the file location of your 1230.cfg.txt file, then use the rename command as follows =

rename 1230.cfg.txt 1230.cfg

hit return and then use the DIR command to confirm the file appears as 1230.cfg (ie without the .txt file extension)

hope this helps, any other problems just reply to this and we'll see what we can do

a lot of pain for converting a functional phone into a phone with as many features an an analogue set. surely the cost of new handsets these days doesn't warrant this much hassle....

If the phone is on the IP Office, it technically should do the conversion when loaded into the IP Office. It sounds like this individual would like to use this phone outside of IP Office.

Quite honestly, they should be using the earliest firmware version, the 2.1 SIP Firmware....it is designed for open sourced, unlike the newer versions which are only designed for Avaya switches.

I disagree on the phones only being as good as analogue. I will list feedback of my Nortel SIP Phones on my IP Office compared to that of analogue.

Instant Disconnect Supervision:
-When opposite party hangs up, the SIP phone automatically releases and goes into idle state-analogue phone doesn't release line.
-CLID appears instantly upon ringing of line while on analogue appears after first ring.
-Speakerphone conversations are crystal clear with IP Technology on SIP phone, while analog line powered speakerphone sounds like a tinny box.
-Nortel SIP Phone can be powered POE without need for power adapter, analogue phone will only support extended features (ringers, high quality speakerphone)with a power adapter.
-Clean Transfers and Conference without switchook pop occurs on SIP phones, while the old school switchook (flash/link) click needs to be initiated to make the connection occur.
-An extensive Audio/Settings menu occurs on the SIP phones, while on analog, only a few settings are available.
-Signaling on SIP sets is instant as opposed to standard POTS delayed signaling on an analogue device
-SIP Phone you can wire up to a computer next to you and take advantage of VOIP only wiring throughout building, analogue phone required a separate RJ-11 jack.
-Features can be programmed into the buttons with self labeling keys, something not commonly available on analog phones.
-Nortel SIP Phones are built to commercial quality while most analog sets are built to less quality.
-The SIP phone (if system allows) can be plugged in anywhere in the world as a remote user, while an analog phone cannot do that.

Those are to name a few....

So Joe yes the phone will be connected to another platform, FREE PBX infact. I want to use it in SIP mode as the UNistim mode has limited capability. where would I get 2.1 SIP Firmware. Will I be able to continue to use the the phone after 30 days with this firmware.
I now have the latest firmware loaded on the 1230 phone so thanks to anyone previous who helped.

Im now trying to work out how to create the 1230SIP.cfg file that the phone looks for after the phone reboots. This is an important one as it sets all the parameters on the phone such as tones etc. Not sure if there is any other way of setting these tones on the phone itself like country specific eetc. any help appreciated

regards

Elaine

Hi Elaine,

I forgot, you are trying to upgrade a 1200 set to SIP, so the earliest firmware those sets support are Nortel 3.2 SIP load. 2.1 is only available on the 1100 sets.

With that said, there is a way to allow the licensed firmware to operate on basic SIP functionality based on the blog post below. you follow the same code for the 1100 sets as you do on the 1200 sets.

Joe have you ever done a sip upgrade on the 1200 phone. Im struggling with the 1230.SIP.cfg file. Ive managed to get the phone upgraded but would like to apply settings in the config file especially to change the tones to my country specific (Ireland)

What level of functionality is it possible to have with basic SIP level like what will or will not work. Seems to be very little info out there from an AVAYA perspective on features or how to obtain then etc

a copy of my 1230.SIP.cfg which phone does not read

a copy of the device config which does not read either. This was made specifically to modify the country specific tones

thanks again in advance
