I had to go out to a down system yesterday and really had no experience at all with CS, Sig Ser, Media Gateway, etc. It was kind of confusing to say the least...
I was wondering if anyone could describe to me how all this hardware communicates with each other...kind of an overview, I guess? Thanks

There were 3 cabinets...top one w/ SSC only, middle one(MG)
with SSC,MC and TMDI cards and bottom one(MG1) with Utrk, Analog, etc.

It sounds like you do have a 1000s with two cabinets that have slots 1 to 4 and the othe one has slots 7 to 10, which I think in programming is referred to slots 11 to 14 and 17 to 20.

It's difficult to explain in detail, but the system connects via an ELAN IP link from the SSC Main cabinet to the SSC on the expansion cabinet and also to the media gateway cards, Sig server and call pilot if fitted as well as any OTM / TM Server.

Also connection is provided for the CLAN (Customers network). Access is available via a number of ways such as Serial, Telent, Rlogin and http etc.

All the best
