Okay, this is kind of a strange one, so I am hopeing that someone has seen this before. Our Norstar system has been working fine for a few years now, and it worked up until this morning. Sometime this morning our Voicemail (call pilot) went down without warning. It just doesn't work. Feature 981, 983, 987, 989, etc... produce "Inactive Feature" on the display. Feature 985 however causes the phone to go completley inactive, and I have yet to find a way to bring the phone back. Help anyone?

it could be a number of things. The first step is to reboot everything. If that does not work have a vendor check it out- specifically the call pilot power supply.

I already rebooted, and I know that Call Pilot is powerd because the fans are working. But thanks for the quick reply.

The fact that the fan is working does not mean the power supply is good. Of course, you would not know this as an end-user. Hence, my recommendation to call a vendor.

okay,
bkrike, there is no vendor available in my area. The only people around that install Nortel systems, came out and looked at it, and said it was some kind of programming problem that required a Nortel Technition, which would cost a fortune to fly in, to fix. I think the guys crazy, because with this system, the voicemail is wired to 2 ports of the phone system, and the system automatically recognizes it as a voicemail addition. I have never seen in any of the progaming menus anything about telling the system where to locate the voicemail. Hence why I am trying to solve this one on my own, because my vendor doesn't know what he's talking about (in my estimation).

Silver,
Yes, it is a startalk system, and there is a fan unit on it that runs CONSTANTLY.

Sounds like and old Startalk. Could be scary because the hard drives on those units have been known to fail. You could try Feature**XFTEST and test all Feature codes to see if any are active.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than to have a frontal lobotomy

I tried that. All features returned Inactive. Well, the first 5 did. I got board. Good Idea though. Thanks.

My comments regarding power supply only apply to call pilot, as you had stated in your title...so please disregard them.

your harddrive is iether dead or in a infinite loop "constantly rebooting"
Choices are
1.get a refurbished startalk"ha ha ha i made a funny"
2.get a new call pilot"may need to upgrade or replace ksu"
3.get a phone system that someone knows how to work on
now dont get me wrong the 1 you got is great if you have support"nothing in life is free"...but if you have no techs then get a system from a local established vendor...

4.if you dont like the answers go somewhere else and ask

"There are those who would make you believe there are no choices left. That they have the last word and its final. To those who try the world is wide open choices many.To those who dont only death awaits you.

hey, all great answers. Thanks Guys.
The probelm is that the hard drive has crashed. We deduced this by taking apart the startalk and checking components. I found that although the hard drive heads were moving, the disk was not spinning. So, this startalk is dead. We are in the market, as it were, for new options. Our PBX is a Norstar Meridian, but I could not tell you what version. What options do we have other than the startalk? Is CallPilot even an option? I was under the impression that those did not work with the older "Norstar" systems. Any ideas on ID'ing my software version? Thanks for the help so far guys, keep it coming.

If you go in under config>maintainance>software version and post the number (should be something like SP:30*****) we can tell you what unit you have and what V/M is compatible.

From what I've found, that sounds like an 8x24 DR5 software version so I think your options are to use an old STARTALK like the one you had or a STARTALK flash V/M or a copper NAM. If you check e-bay you can probably find one of these for a pretty reasonable price.

I do have a CallPilot 100 with a dead power supply. I tested with a voltmeter and no juice. Is there a place I can get an inexpensive replacement? Can I use a generic off the shelf one?
TIA

You can purchase a replacement Startalk hard drive on ebay.
Regards
Gary

This problem has been solved. I replaced my old startalk with a FlashVM that works rather well, after the initial setup.
