I am Kevin,

I am new to the phone business. I have a subscriber in our exchange (private school), who is using a Norstar system. Not sure how many lines are on it, I did not install it. They also received a complete, Norstar system as a donated gift. I was told the user of the gifted Norstar system, had it set up where they were able to press an extension, and someone in another town or county would pick up the line as if they were in the same building on the same system. How was this done? Did someone misunderstand the giver?

The private school is asking me to install the gifted system in another building, with no physical connection between the two buildings, to use it as if they were one system in the same building (extensions, paging, ect.) Is this possible?

Another phone system is not an option. The only option available to me is to make use of what they have between the 2 Norstar systems.

Thanks for your expertise and advice on this matter.

Kevin

It can be done with a point to point PRI or E&M trunks. You really need to bring in a certified tech to evaluate what you have and see what needs to be done to install it. This is not a project for newbie.

Is it possible that the "extension" button was actually a external speed dial? I agree with allworxguy this is not a job for a newbie. If both sites had a call pilot I think you could setup park and page to the other site thru the auto attendant, but they would be two different sites. If they want more I would call for help.

Thanks...
I can not be certain about any config as the info comes from one who knew one who worked at the office of the gifted switch. I know, I know.... that source of information is full of loose ends, but that's the story I got.

Just brain storming here so not sure if it would work but might be worth a try.

Main System:
- install an ATA and wire that i/c into a trunk position on the gifted system
- program access to this trunk on the sets of the gifted system
- result, you have an i/c off the main system to make internal calls to the main system

Gifted System:
- install an ATA and wire that i/c into a trunk position on the main system
- program access to this trunk on the sets of the main system
- result, you have an i/c off the gifted system to make internal calls to the gifted system

Good Luck.

Take a look at Citel.com they have remote extenders. I have used the fiber extender with an on campus school that used an underground fiber backbone and I am considering using their remote PBX extenders to locate T7316e sets at a remote location. This way you have one main system and the rest are all remote using analog lines or the internet. It is an easy plug and play option. The sets operate as normal and you can use all of the features in both locations. You can set up a single dialing plan with extensions, paging and one voice mail system. You can transfer calls from one property and set to another.

Norstar systems can be networked together using T-1, PRI or even pots lines if there's no physical connection between the two systems. Routing and destination code programming allows three or four digit dialing between sites. The extension numbers in system A would be programmed as destination codes in system B and vice-versa. Transferring calls between sites with this type of setup works good. Programming 'automatic dial' on each set makes this type of setup work more smoothly too.

Check out the Networking with Norstar chapter starting on page 109 in the manual:
