I know the Norstar well but have never done anything with SMDR. A potential new customer with SMDR on his MICS has some questions - can you point me in the right direction and give me some general info. Not sure of the software release but system was upgraded in the last 3 years and their is a T1 card in it. Heres what I need:
1) What hardware is needed for SMDR? I know he accesses real time info from his pc. Give me a brief general idea how to install from scratch.
2) Can you access SMDR reports from more than one pc?
If yes, how?
3) Is there any way to track internal calls from extension to extension?
4) Is it possible to track incoming calls to DId extensions. It is a straight T1 in the system (24 voice channels). Customer talked about upgrading to PRI.

1. SMDR6 is the hardware u need, serial cable to PC with call accounting software (post version of system for a compatible smdr)
2. depends on the software u use - the smdr can dump info to only one PC
3. NO
4. Yes

To senk1s: can you ealaborate on #4 a little (tracking incoming DID calls)
Specifically, is PRI needed? Programming for SMDR is not done from the Norstar - correct? Would it be done from the software loaded on the customers pc?
Also, what would you have to do to rcv SMDR reports on more than one pc? Anxiously awaiting your reply - thanks!

Station Message Detail Recording (SMDR) serves as an interface that lets the user track basic call detail information by: all calls, outgoing calls only, calls with an account code, or by long distance calls. Connected to any station port, it provides basic reports in Norstar or Meridian 1 format. The unit is the interface to import call detail information into Norstar PC Applications software. There are five versions of SMDR. SMDR6 is the most recent version that I am aware of.

SMDR supports the following capabilities:
• CLID and ANI information in Norstar and SLI format;
• ISDN trunks and terminals;
• Maximum of 120 simultaneous line calls;
• Serial port support for baud rates from 1,200 to 19,200;
• TCM pass-through for support of a Norstar station set on the same TCM loop;
• Reduction of hardware requirements to conform with industry standard cable
connections;
• LED status indicator.

Plug the SMDR6 into a station port. Connect the SMDR to a PC with a serial port cable. You can plug a digital station into the SMDR, so you don't have to give up a port. Feature 9*2 lets you set-up the SMDR.

The SMDR dumps ASCII data to the serial port. I wrote a program that runs on a PC, continiously reads the serial port and outputs the data to a file on our server. Anyone with access to the folder can read the file.

A Google search should locate off-the-shelf software to do what you want.

The Norstar data format looks like this. You will note that we are using ISDN-PRI.

Incoming call:
-------- 05/23/04 02:06:48 LINE = 0176 STN = 521
CALLING NUMBER 9876543210

cowenby was too detailed ...and i was the opposite ...

you can monitor any incoming call (t1, PRI, analog)
programming is done from the norstar - for the SMDR

hte smdr itself cannot send the data to multiple PCs ..you need to locate a software that would let you share the info over a lan ...
we have installed telecost.com 's shadow ...but dont know if it does support sharing information

I hate to keep beating a dead horse with this SMDR, but I just want to ask a couple more things:
1) You said programming for the SMDR was done from the Norstar. I looked at my programming and installation CD on the MICS and SMDR or Call Accounting was not even mentioned. Please elaborate just a little more. I assummed (probably incorrectly) that the SMDR module was just plug and play(using a digital sta. port) and all programming would be done from the Call Accounting software. Since I have never seen the software I would have no idea where to begin even if that is true.
Is there any web sites where I can download more info on the Norsar SMDR?
2) Am I correct in saying that the Norstar SMDR module only supports one pc for report outputs? You indicated the CA software would then have to network to other pc's.
Does the Norstar support more than one SMDR module?

Any and all help appreciated.

when u buy the smdr, you get the admin guide with it
the smdr has only one output
i dont know if the system supports multiple smdrs

The Smdr uses a digital port off of the Ksu, it is about the same size as an analog adapter and also needs power which comes with the unit. You can use an existing phones extension, say the computer you wanted the smdr to hook up to was yours, you can use your extension for the smdr and still have your phone work too. You would use a com port off of your PC that connects to the smdr via a cable. Programming is done through the phone using the smdr's feature codes. Only one per system, since the codes to get into programming does not give options for multipals. Software for call accounting varies, so i'm not sure about multipal pc's. And it will record any call made, outgoing or internal.
Hope that helps.

I'll have to disagree with galfaro on one item, you can have master/slave smdr6 units but the smdr6 system coordinator guide dosen't say why you might want one, I havent tried running two so I cannot say how well it works. I suspect you may want a slave to give you different formats for output.

I installed two SMDRs in a Master/Slave setup. It gave me redundancy in case one of the computers or one of the SMDRs failed. (And one SMDR did fail!! And occusionly there'd be a 'burp' on one of the capture computers.)

But then I had two SMDRs because the two offices I support merged and I combined their seperate Nortel systems into one.

OK Redundency makes sense then, I was thinking more along the line of a call accounting packaage for the calls made and a PMS package to monitor room status (clean, occupied etc)
