Norstar Phone Swapping

Just started a new job and I'm trying to read up on the old Nortel Norstar phone system in use here. As someone brand new to managing telephone systems, I appreciate all the forum posts on tek tips that have already been a huge help.

In the past, all phone changes in our organization have been done by pulling out telephone wire in the patch panel and redirecting it to the new location. With a number of employees moving and changing offices, I'd hoped to find a better way. We have our system configured so you can call our phone line (xxx-xxx-2xxx) and be directed straight to the user's extension and all numbers in the 200 extension range have this capability but 300s or 400s don't. So when two employees switched offices this week, I found out I could use **266344 > System prgrming > Change DNs to swap their phone lines without moving any cables! It didn't move their names, but that wasn't a big deal. Afterward, the person with extension 216 couldn't receive outside calls while the person with 350 could. When I call xxx-2216 I get instantly disconnected while xxx-2350 connects and displays extension 216 on that office phone. Obviously I'm missing something important here but neither the manuals nor scouring the web has turned up the solution.

Change DN is just that, changed the extension number.

The easiest way when the cabling system is setup like yours (for this very purpose) is to unplug Joe's cable in from port 42 (his old office) and plug it into port 43 (his new office).....cant get an easier.
Set Relocation in programming helps but then you muck up everything that the companies spent thousands of dollars doing and the sets will not be on their original ports.

Thank whom ever that you do not have to buy and use a special tool like we techs do and punch cross-connect.
You should reverse what you did in programming then relocate the patch cord like the site was designed to do.

As for 300s or 400s sorry but do not understand what you were trying to say at all.

Swapping over the DN's in programming is only part of the change as you will also need to check and change the target line or lines as these relate to your DID number.

If you are the sole person making the changes, then I would consider enabling set relocation to swap over the phones and then turn it off again. This might make life much easier for you.

Set Relocation is the easiest way to do this. Set Relocation will copy all of the set programming as well as the mailbox programming. We have certain customers that leave it on all the time because they move phones around so much. It works best if you move phones 1-2 at a time, otherwise things can get messed up.
