Hello,
Starting up a family business and we just leased office space with a Norstar Modular ICS Plus system that "appears" intact: it's got 5 DS cards, a voicemail card etc and doesnt look like the previous tenants bothered pillaging anything else from it. It's got the main cabinet which is 2 bigger cabinets stuck together and a smaller cabinet to the side, so 3 cabinets altogether. To the side of the cabinets there is a small flat box with a vga outlet and some rj45 jacks in it. There is also a fastRAD box connected to. When i turn on the power, lights do go on on all the various boxes.
Question is:
How can i tell if this is usuable or not? apart from the VGA outlet i can't figure out how i can plug a keyboard or mouse in and start to look around. My guess is this is super old stuff and had a dummy terminal that hooked up to the vga?
in any case, renos/construction will start soon. I am doing the cat5 cabling myself. As it is a family business we're trying to save as much money as possible so if we can use this Norstar, it would be great. i just need to know when to decide that the Norstar is not operational and need to start thinking about other options.
At work, i deal with Nortel Option 11s and am also hoping programming and LD's are the same too. So... how do i check to see if the Norstar is salvageable without any network or voice lines/circuits in place yet?

any help would be much appreciated. thanks

Should all be usable, your not to clear on the VGA, their is VGA on the bottom, not side of a NAM.

All boxes on wall should have a label in black writing at the top.

DS cards do not support caller ID.

Are you positive that it's VGA and not a serial port? Count the pins, or try gently to plug in a VGA cable to be sure. If you confirm it to be VGA, maybe plug in a monitor and see what comes up?

I plugged a monitor into our NAM and it gives you an OS/2 desktop ... however yours must not be a NAM since those are big cabinets, not small and flat.

The "smaller cabinet" would be for 3 line cards (12x0)?
What's in the second big cabinet then ?
The one with the 2 line cards is the main MICS cabinet.
The small flat one with RJ11 plugs and serial 9 pins connector is a voice mail, probably named "FLASH 2" or "FLASH 4".

If you could plug a set in one of the pairs (unplug a cable from the FLASH module and plug it behind a set) that should at least let you know if the system is booting properly...

Other than that, as CurlyCord said, DS = Disconnect Supervision (not as useful as Caller ID!) Try to see what software you have in there (the cartridge in the main MICS cabinet is at the top and has a handle molded into the casing. Does it have a card (pcmcia) slided in ?

yeah now that you mention, i dont recall if it was vga or a serial connection. it was dark in the room.

here's another question, previous tenants were obviously a medium sized office with at least 50 people.
with what we're doing for our business, we'd probably only need 4 or 5 working phones.
that said, is it overkill to try and get a pbx up for this amonut of usage? anyone know if i can just order a BRI and have it work with this?
again trying to save money and not have too many recurring annual costs. Would anyone suggest i just order some centrex lines and avoid the headache?

I would call in a vendor for an hour and discuss what it is you have on site (inventory of hardware and software release) and how you want to set things up.
Now that would prevent and head aches.
