I am an office manager for a consulting company. Our old office manager left, and I need to know how to program our voicemail system. MANY things have changed requiring a complete reprogramming. Can someone give me a detailed guide explaining everything, including how to hook up a PC to the system.

I have never programmed a voicemail system, so the more detailed the better.

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm...I do not believe there's enough space allowed in this thread to get thru chapter 1.

Seriously, though...that's a lot of information to post here. Suggest hiring a Nortel telephone installer/programmer to go through the set-up with you. Ask a lot of questions and take notes. If they're cool (like me), they'll throw in an administrator's manual on CD.

I guarantee this will be money well spent. Although Nortel is one of the easiest & user-friendly voicemails to program, if you've never programmed voicemail before, it'll make your eyes bleed.

I've been installing/programming Nortel for four years now and I still pull my hair out of my head on occasion (see previous post).

How do I activate the voicemail feature? It's already programmed (the old setup), but since we lost power, it's no longer "activated."

Does anyone have the manual to program the voicemail system they could make available for download?

Thanks again!

OK. Here's VM programming in a nutshell (I'm assuming you have Nortel Flash or CallPilot).

Feat 982 - turns on/off VM.
Feat 983 - programs VM & boxes, AA, Tables, Greetings, CCR & Lines
Feat 981 - programs individual mailboxes.

Have fun!

P.S. - If you lose programming due to a power-outage, you've got bigger problems.

Feature 982 only says "inactive feature." I need to at least get the old voicemail system back online. Could the flash have been erased due to the outage?

When I choose feature 983, it asks for a password and since it's been a long time since this was setup, no one knows the password. How do I reset it even though the voicemail system is "inactive?

Have you checked your Feature code ranges? Is the unit powered up? Is the unit punched down and/or assigned to the correct port? Check "Maintenance" (Port/DN status) and see if system recognizes VM.

Nortels web site has documentation thAT sometimes is available for download. What voicemail feature are you talking about that needs to be activated. You said you lost power. does your display on your phone say inactive feature when you try to get into vocemail. If this is the case there could be one of several issues. I agree with the other tech it sounds like you need to hire a nortel service vendor. It will be money well spent. Sometimes it's a ten minute fix for someone who does this for a living. It could take you a 40 hour work week trying to get the vmail the way you need it to be.

Feature 983 is the only feature available and it's asking for a password that we don't have.

How do I "Check "Maintenance" (Port/DN status) and see if system recognizes VM."?

Thanks again!

How do I "Check "Maintenance" (Port/DN status) and see if system recognizes VM.?"

Get into the system programming, scroll down to "Maintenance", show, then down to Port/DN status and check the port that the VM is punched down on. If the port says "StTk1" (or something similar), then you know the system sees it.

There is no maintenace option in system programming.

Huh? What system do you have?

Maintenance is right down there near System Programming

e.g. - System Programming, Software Keys, Hardware, Maintenance...

I have the Nortel Networks T7316 with Norstar Flash voicemail.

Huh? A T7316 is a telephone, not a system...

Do you see the big gray box on the wall? What system is that?

Norstar Flash

I found the Maintenance setting in the system and port/DN status. Now what? It gives me two options: DN or list.

Not DN, but Port. Enter the port that the VM is punched down to and see what it says.

How do I know what port the VM is punched down to?

Thanks again!

Well...if you hired a qualified tech, they numbered the 66 block by port. So, all you have to do is follow the cross-connects from the VM box to the port. Read the number and bingo! However, if you hired a tech who was your secretary's brother's cousin who used to work for the phone company, then your 66 blocks are most likely un-numbered.

Easier way to do this is search all ports, one at a time in Maintenance until you find one that reads "StTk1" (or something similar).

Did you try Feat 985? That'll also show you the VoiceMail DN...then you can convert the DN to Port and check that.

But, on the other hand, if the system recognizes Feat 985 and shows the DN, then you really don't have to check the port status.

Now...on to page two.

All the ports say idle except for my extension. It says busy.

This is what it reads: P0101:221. I have three options: Device, B2, state. When I choose state, it says busy. I'm assuming that is because 221 is my extension.
