Norstar CICS Programming Help 2

I just started work at a new company, and I need help in a few areas on configuring an existing Norstar CICS system.

1) How do I change the extension names so that when one extension calls another, the caller's name rather than extension number shows up on the callee's display?

2) How do I change the configuration on a single extension? I have a user that wants to pick up the phone and have dial tone. Right now, when she picks up the phone, she has to pick a line first.

3) Does anyone have an electronic copy of the installation manual and/or programming guides? We don't have any documentation.

I feel your pain.

You may be able to wander your way through the menus and get it mostly right if you merely access the configuration menus. To do that, dial FEATURE **CONFIG. The password, if the previous person didn't change it, should be CONFIG.

As to where the manuals are, good luck getting them. They're the keys to the kingdom and Nortel doesn't give them to the customer--only to service providers ("channel partners"). So I bought mine on eBay.

Got a CD for about $20, I think. Saved me all sorts of trouble and money because I can program the phone system I own. (Gosh! What a novel concept!) That kind of locked-in business model is the bane of my existence. Can't stand companies who do that, but that's their choice, and you don't have to buy a Nortel system, so it's "your own fault," so to speak.

Anyway, ez-manuals.com will sell you a set for $50 on CD, but they also auction on eBay for less.

It may be the "bane of existance" for you, Bill. Some of us out here have worked very hard to gain the knowledge we have and don't feel we should just give it away for free. Training and certifications for Nortel equipment is very expensive. We train the companies who purchase these systems from us to a certain point(adding, changing mailboxes, admin level programming) but not to much else. Just my 2 cents.

These are both very simple changes, here's a walk through:

This must be done from an M7310, M7423 or T7316 phone

Feature **config
The default password is config

The display will show Terminals and Sets
And you'll notice that there will be three triangles next to your buttons. The bottom triangles navigate left and right through the programming menu. The upper left triangle goes back up to the previos menu and the upper right triangle selects the current option.

Press the upper right triangle button and the display will read show set:__ enter the extension that you want to change

If you picked extension 22 the display will now show 22:22 or 22:name

Press the upper right triangle to select that extension

The display will now show Line Access

Press the bottom right triangle two times and the display will show Name:22 or Name:name

Press the button under change on the display and enter the new name using the keypad like you do on your cellphone. After each letter you can press # or the button under --> to go to the next letter.

After you have entered the name press the bottom right triangle to save your changes

Then press the pink release / hang up button to exit programming

your display will now show UPDATE as it's configuring that extension.

You can repeat this for each set or you can press the upper right triangle button a few times to get back to where you can select another extension



As for having to select a line to make a call I'll need more information on your configuration. Do all the extensions require the user to select a line or do any automatically select one when you pick up the handset or press 9?

Some of the extensions do automatically select a line when a handset is picked up. Is there a way to copy another extensions' config?

Yes, enter programming mode, goto the set that autmatically selects a line, select line access, navigate right a few times to where it says prime line, it should say either none, i/c, pool a-? or line 001-?

go back to the extension you want to change and make it match the one that works

This is assuming a lot about your current configuration such as line access, restrictions and such but is worth a try. Just make sure to keep track of what you change so you can change it back if it doesn't work
