I have been looking @ the replies from firebird and they have been very helpful. My current situation is that I have a bcm 400 and the disk is showing signs of failure. We are very familiar with disks and cloning but do not have an understanding of the phone system. I would like to backup the system, take out the hard drive, clone it to another drive (maybe different size) and put it back into system and reboot. Will this work or are there steps I am missing. I currently have a working system but the last time it went down (due to electric being turned off it took 5 goes to get it to reboot) can you assist pls

Hello Tommy Maguire

I'm here!. You should really be on the BCM forum at

The link below is a guide that I did for the BCM 50 systems that used Linux. You haven't said what version on BCM 400 you are having problems with?.

If it is 4.0 (Linux), then the guide will be almost the same except that you will need an IDE hard disk. All BCM 200, 400 and 1000 use the older IDE hard disk and I think they were around 20 gigs in capacity.

You can also clone the older BCM systems that had Windows NT as it's operating system. Doing the backups on them is very tricky and you might need an old computer such as XP to work with.

thank you very much it is a linux system, we have a lot of experience in cloning and backups etc but have no experience of phone systems although I know fundamentally it is a computer.
It is currently working perfectly and I do not wish to break it just to ensure I have taken precautions for if it does break. Precention is better than cure. I have loads of ide disks but all will be @ least 40 gb is this an issue.?

I think the 80 Gigs will be fine. The important thing is to do a few backups first. One onto your computer and a few onto a USB stick. I tend to schedule them once a month on the USB port out of hours.

You might want to load in a new image first and I have one that is just over 3 gigs that I did using the Acronis tool and it will fit onto a DVD.

It would then just being a case of using that image and then restoring a backup copy from the BCM 400 system.
