I'm trying to do a couple of things and hope someone can help.

1/ Is it possible to SHUTDOWN as oppossed log off for someone not using the Administrator login.

2/ Can the control ALT delete at startup be removed and how?

and a little more technically -

3/ can you remotely close down all applications of one type(in this instance Internet Explorer) and then restart a single instance of that application?

You need to be more specific.You questions are not to clear. Also I assume you are talking about W2K server.
If you restate your questions I might be able to help you.


Note : the control Alt Del option on windows is there to force an initiation to get to the log on screen the is to varify that there isn't a false login screen that can possible be placed there by a rogue software. Hackers use this fake log on screen to capture user names and passwords.

First question - if not logged in as the Administrator - when you choose shutdown from the start button the only option you are presented with is logoff. I would like to be able to shut the computer down without logging off, logging back in as the administrator and then shutting down.

Second Question: I think you got this. THere is no security issue as nothing sensitive is stored on the computers involved.

Third question: I'm lazy - my business requires all internet explorer windows shut down after each customer uses them, then a new window opened. I was hoping this was possible to do from a remote computer - namingly the one in my office.

1. Why don't you just put your regular user account into the local administrator group on this machine. Then you will be able to shutdown as well as logging off.

2. I am not sure if you can do this on a win2k server... On a Win2K workstation the installation will ask you if you are the only person working with this machine and then enable the automatic login. So there will not be any login prompt at all. This is a registry setting so you could also do this with your existing installation. Try using the TweakUI utillity. Or do you want to remove only the CTRL+ALT+DEL but still have a login prompt? - I think I've seen this setting as well in the registry. Not sure about that though.

Please note: I would not recommend these things in a security concerned environment.

1. You can set shut down priveleges for users through the policies. I would not suggest giving them admin rights.

2. There is always a network security issue if some one can get access to a user account.
