I've been using a 30GB 5400 rpm Maxtor drive for some time and am used to its near silent operation. I purchased a Maxtor 60GB 7200 rpm drive and it is considerably noisier than the older drive. Is this normal due to the higher speed or is there likely to be a fault with the drive.

Thanks
Edmund

I've found a wide variation in the noise levels of disks. Have a look on the Maxtor site for the technical specs of the two drives & compare the Decibel figures given (assuming they're there!). One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)

This might sound silly but is it secured in its bay? It will make more noise than a 5400 but not enough to be annoying.

Many of the newest 7,200 drives are near silent, infact all of the main manufactures have been concentrating on lowering the noise output from there newest lineups.
So the slightly older 5,400 drive despite it's speed is likely to be noisier than the newer 7,200.
Obviously it will depend on the specific drive and Maxtor's stated noise output level for this drive.
Either way it shouldn't be that noisey to be annoying.

Sometimes even the same model harddrives vary by revisions. I bought for myself a Seagate 30gig U Series 5 hd, 5400rpm, and this thing is so quite it's remarkable. Six months later I purchase two more Seagate 30gig U Series 5 hd's, 5400rpm, and they are both so noisy.
