i am running a sco unix 5.05
when i start the system seems to work ok,
after a half an hour nobody can log in and if somebody log out he cant log in again. i cant also log in from the
tty02, tty03...tty012, from the console.
the other point is that if somebody logout his tty stays
int system and the system numbers him as a user eventhough
he had log out.
after that i cant shutdown the system properly.
the only change i have done is that i install and unistall
a scsi taoe (dat).
i have never done any change , for the last mont, to innitab file.
...does anybody knows anything about this?
i would be very greatfull if somebody could help me.

ps..the inittab in etc is link file?
/etc/inittab@ (?)

Did by any chance do you get this error message when trying to login "LOGIN: ERROR - Failed to initialize policy manager"?

We had similiar symptoms that you described. It turns out that our /pmd directory was corrupted. This directory should have three pipes in it: IPCCT_pipe, PMDCT_pipe, and LST_pipe. Somehow these were removed. We brought the system down with a haltsys on the one console tty01 we could get working. "shutdown's" did not work for us, either.

SCO's website ( has an article numbered 104851 that describes other possibilities.
