Hello all,

Recently, I added a new vlan to our existing network, making the total number of vlan 28, everything works okay except on one switch (model WS-C3508G-XL-EN ).
It refused to get the new vlan update and it is stuck to 27 vlans.
I then made the following checks to find out what was wrong.
I checked that it is part of our vtp domain.
I checked and reset the vtp password.
I checked to ensure switch was setup as a client.
I checked that it was running same vtp version.
I checked the configuration revision number was not higher than the vtp server (model WS-C3750G-12S ).
VTP version 2 mode is disabled across the entire network.
I moved the switch to transparent mode and back to client
Still no joy so I deleted the vlan.dat and moved the switch to transparent mode and added new vlan manually and all works okay.
But I need to get this working as a client rather than manually updating the vlan changes.
Any idea what could be wrong?

Many thanks

The two switches are directly connected to one another.

It's the LOWER configuration revision number that counts, not the higher one. The higher one gets ignored.

Sometimes you need to trigger a VTP update to make them sync up.. Also make sure the password is the same.

Go into the VTP server and add a vlan, then exit. It should sync up after this.. Go in and delete the vlan you just created.

Burt,

The revision number on the vtp server goes up in increments of one everytime a change is made to the vlan.dat on the vtp server and this is what the clients in the same vtp domain use as a check point to update their vlan database.
I have also carried out your suggestion of forcing a vlan update but it still won't sync. VTP password is the same on but switches.

You do have a trunk between the two switches?

Could you show the config of the trunks?

There are 8 switches on the network and they all have a trunk to the C3750 switch and all vlans are allowed out of the trunks from the C3750 switch. They all work fine with the exception of this C3508G switch. I will get the trunk config when I get back to the office.

Sorry guys---I must have been thinking of root bridge priorities...
For kicks, have you tried deleting a vlan from the 3508G to see if the new vlan then gets added, like it is limited for some reason? Most other switches support 1005, but that is only 256 locally, so maybe the number of vtp updated vlans is limited? Curious...can you put CatOS on a 3508G?

Burt

Cat 3508's are IOS only.. I would try from scratch again as burtsbees said.

The MD5 checksum doesn't match, so some paramter is incorrect. I believe it should match on every switch.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

BuckWeet

Can you post a sh run from the 3508? There are only 11 vlans in that switch...I'm thinking that maybe you could be pruning?

Burt

The sh vtp stat shows he's not pruning.

Maybe some more info via a sh ver might help?

Also need the configs from the trunk links. I would default the switch including deleting vlan.dat . Add the vtp password and thats it , it should automatically pick up the vtp domain by itself if its going to work .

Vipergg, I have done exactly what you suggested, i.e deleting vlan.dat, resetting switch to default, but to no avail.
