I can't load the volume control on the task bar. I opened multimedia in the settings folder and volume control is grayed out. Any ideas? Thanks

Check Control Panel>Multimedia. Are the Preferred Devices also greyed-out? If so, you'll need to re-install your sound card drivers.

If you are hearing sound, go to Start>Run, and type:
sndvol32

If the file doesn't exist on the hard drive, you'll need to extract it from the cab files to the c:\windows directory. To find the correct cab, go to Start><Find>Files & Folders, check the "containing text" box and type in sndvol32.exe. Look in the c:\windows\options\cabs directory or put in the original CD.

I opened the multimedia and only the volume control is grayed out. I have no sound and the <find> turned up no files. I put in the Win 98 disc and loaded all the features under Multimedia, but still no sound. I found under system devices "PCI multimedia Audio" I clicked but it states can't find driver. I have loaded all software.

Did you receive any other disks with your computer?
When did it happen?

Locate the manufacturer and/or model number of your sound card and go to the web site for the drivers.
