No valid IP add off DHCP ??!!

I can connecty to a wireless router fine. But it doesnt give me a valid IP address.

All other laptops work fine.

Brand new HP NC6400 (I have 6 and they are all the same).

Someone said something about upgrading Winsock to ver 2 ???

Help and thoughts !

What is not valid about the IP address?

What happens when you type

verify that ur firewall permits dhcp protocol, ur getting a autoconfig ip from windows, that usally happends when the dhcp server cant be reached

I must be missing sumthin here.

If I can connect wirelessly (to the DHCP Router) then why would it not issue the correct address ?

Windows Firewall is turned off .........

Utility available on the laptop to verify connection? And to change security settings?
Even though you are connected by radio your security settings may be blocking the packet transfer at either end.

With it being wireless, do you have WEP enabled (or MAC address filtering) and is this setup on the laptop ok?

Also, is your router configured to only give a certain number of IP Addresses out?

As already mentioned, you will get the 164 IP Address if the DHCP server (in this case your router) cannot be connected to. And although you say you can connect to the router, maybe the reason you do not get a valid DHCP address is because the WEP authentication (or whetever authentication you use) is not working correctly.
