My Sister has a Gateway w 2.5 Ghz Processor that I recently bought a new sound card for. Getting it to work is a different matter. I have been through the sound troubleshooter SO much that I can practically recite it in my sleep. I have checked for and removed 5 viruses from this computer and even started checking the registry. The new sound card has noise coming from the speakers when a sound should play but only a staticky type noise. Please help asap....

Is there onboard sound and if so have you disabled it in the CMOS? What sound card are we talking about?

Sound Card is CMI8738 6-Channel PCI 3D Sound Card

No Onboard sound at all

What was the old sound card?
You might want to make sure all old sound card drivers are gone.
Also check all settings, including mute buttons in control panel\sound and audio devices\volume and the check in audio in the same place. Make sure the drivers for your sound card are listed there. Check volume if you have it in your taskbar.
Also check device mgr.

ok... and then after that??? i mean something has got to be making it not work....

Are you using "powered" speakers, and is the cable pluged into the correct port?

You might wanna check the drivers for the sound cards and if the drivers are good then the next logical thing is the speakers.

Are you playing music from a CD? If so,make sure the audio cable is connected from the CD-ROM drive to the sound card. You can also try a different audio source (like an MP3 on the pc) and while its playing, try each of the jacks on the soundcard. Sometimes the labels can be misleadng.

Does the headphones jack work with headphones? If so what kind of speakers does she have?
