no sound when file is on time line or when rendered

i have a video clip of a dolby surround thing i want to place on one of my party movies as a joke. the sound and everything all works perfect except when i place the clip on the time line, then it seems to disapear. is this a security feature on the avi or something more sinister

any advice would be tops.

also what would be the best tutorial for an upcoming speilberg to learn from just to get started?
