Hi
Im using Windows xp pro. and the problem i have is that my computer is not playing any kind of sound. Everything seems to be fine and working and music seems to play but no sound comes out and am really frustrated now. ive read other threads similar to this but i havent really find an answer... if somebody knows how to fix this please tell me what to do i am not very good with computers and this site its my last chance thank you.
my driver is a VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM)
Driver Provider: VIA technologies, Inc.
Driver Date: 1/22/2003
Driver Version: 6.14.1.3900
Driver Signer:Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher.

please anyone who can help me thanks...

Check your playback volume controls, and be sure the speakers are connected. Also, if headphones are plugged in, check for sound in the headphones. Then disconnect them.

What mobo is this? My ECS K7VTA3 board uses 6.14.1.3850, dated 02-26-2003. By the way, the reason my driver is so old: there have been two up-dates from Microsoft through the years, and both of them killed my audio! Both times I had to re-install the original drivers from the System Install CD.

2 quick questions. Do you have a small speaker icon on the bottom right corner of the taskbar and 2) are the speakers you are using have the color coding to let you know where to plug them into your computer. I have seen people just connect the speakers in the wrong spot.

no i dont have any small icon but the speakers are color coded and where they supposed to be thats not the problem...

Question..how do u do to check if your sound device is enabled in the bios??

Somthing interesting i just found out, i was playing a game and the speakers were playing some of the music of the game not even all the sounds but when i tried something else it would not play not even system sounds now how is this possible? this is beginning to be a really anoying problem..

I still cant solve the problem please help me...im sorry for the inconvinience..

Buy and install a cheap sound card, and disable onboard audio. For $10.00, this will tell you if it's a Windows problem or a hardware problem. May be a waste of money, but what is your sanity worth?

It seems clear to me that if you've not even been into the sound mixer you don't know what is enabled/turned up. Sounds like you may be playing audio from the CD but your Wave volume is muted/turned down, hence music but no sounds.

Go to Start Menu --> Programs --> Accessories --> Entertainment --> Sound Mixer or something like that. You can then ensure nothing is muted or turned down.

nothing is muted or turned down... i tried updating the driver and it did but with problems it now says cant start device (code 10) why?
