I have installed vista... looks and works well, but I have no sound! checked the drivers and they seem to be ok. does anyone know if the functionality has been added to beta 2?
thanks,
MEAB

Sound has been available in all the Beta versions I have seen. Have you tried the Vista version of Windows Update and see if they have anything for you under "Optional Updates" in the result list that appears when you run Windows Updates?

linney,
I checked the windows update...and nothing... the sound seems to be playing but, no sound... Im sure MS will add updates... They still hae a long way to go.
Thanks,
MEAB

Vista doesn't support ISA sound cards like the SB16, nor non-ISA sound cards that run emulating something like a SoundBlaster 16 card.

What type of Sound Card do you have? Can you check the manufacturer's support, a few are testing beta drivers that they make available to the public.

It is not something silly like having the Mute box checked is it?

I installed vista on a gateway laptop with the Intel chipset 82855 I believe that it handles sound as well as video...not sure thought. I also get no glass effect either, I believe this to be attributed to the lack of power that the video card has.

What did the compatibility checker tell you?

You may as well take it for a ride even if you can't hear where your going.

There are going to be an increase in computer sales because of Vista, and I dread the price of the operating system itself, I'm guessing $500 for "Ultimate", I hope I'm wrong.

I've actually had the same problem. When I installed Vista on my Desktop, I had onboard, but I had it disabled in the bios and was using a CreativeLabs soundcard -- one of those generic ones you find all over the place -- I tried rebooting, I even tried going to driverguide.com and downloading the some XP drivers to try a re-install with the 'latest' drivers. That didn't work, so I thought that maybe my PCI slot had gone bad. So I swapped the slot and still no luck. I think after the 2nd or 3rd reboot after swapping it finally took. I think it's a little flaky in that respect. Also it'll be hard when installing Vista right now to get a lot of 'good' drivers, since it's still in development.
It also Blue-screened whenever I tried to run something from CD or DVD. (That was a fun/frustrating time)
I should have thought to enable the onboard sound in the bios and I might not have had that trouble. <duh>

Also if what linney says is true, and it'll be going for $500, then it might be worth investing in MSDNAA for a year just to get the software a lot cheaper. [bigsmile]

Again I stress that cost figure of mine was a clueless guesstimate (also I live in Australia where the $AU hovers around 75-80% of $US).

As to drivers (again referring to the Microsoft Beta site) there was a download available that contained numerous special drivers for Vista, most of them seemed to refer to Networking)

"Legacy Drivers for Beta 2 and Up"
You probably have to be a bonifide Beta Tester to access it?
