sound has stopped coming from my PC speakers.I have done the following:
1.used a headphone: still no sound
2.checked the drivers:no problem reported.
It seems to be a hardware problem with the sound card. could you tell me how to make sure that the fault lies with the sound card and if needs to be replaced?

Are you absolutely sure it isn't something as simple as speaker setup, or even the volume has been turned off, it is possible that you have more than one volume control.
Check sound in control panel as well as in the cards supplied software, make sure digital out isn't sellected if not being used, setup speakers etc etc, i've been caught out several times with a box being incorrectly checked.
Lastly, are you sure you have the speaker jack in the correct socket?

yes, i have checked the volume controls, speaker jack, device driver properties. i'm pretty sure that its a problem with the sound card, only i dont know how to confirm this. any suggestions?

is this a sound card or an onboard sound card. does your speakers require a 120v supply, if so try another outlet. if it is a card try reseating the card. do you have any thing unusual in device manager, such as a yellow question mark or a red x.LOL PEARL

Hello Sarveshm:
I just had the same problem. It was after installing the latest update for my win2k{ "huuuhhh?" he says, scratching his beard). It was a Philips Seismic Edge card. I ended up uninstalling all my sound card drivers and associated software, Powered down then removed, cleaned slot and card and re-seated card. Then I started and re-installed all my drivers and software. All works fine now. Happy, happy, joy, joy.

I had a problem with my speakers. I wasn't using digital out for my crappy ass couple of speakers and that was what was selected. So I had no sound. Try check that in your volume control

As I do believe that was mentioned some speakers (like the ones I used to have on my Aptiva) don't come with a 120V power amp so you cannot hear any sound. Also try another set of speakers or try your speakers with a cd player or such. There could also be an IRQ conflict if you have just installed something lately. After I installed my modem my sound card wouldn't work. Scotty Mac a.k.a smaxted

I am having a problem with the computer.
In windows 2000 when ever i dial the modem hangs and as this is a interneal modem the system also hangs and needs to be restarted.
Modem: HSP56 modem. I am having a dial-up line.

the problem of no sound has been solved !
it was because the volume bar in winamp had been turned down to zero.
increasing the volume in winamp bought back the volume.
thanks to everyone for their help.
