No SafeBoot, Machine freezes

gonna need a little history...is this a new problem on a machine that was working? is this a completely new install that's failing? at what point during the safe boot do you freeze?

yes, new problem. NAV alert to Trojan in two files that I cannot find. Symantec suggested I re-boot in Safe Mode to run Virus Scan....so I tried But?
Tried Safe Mode but the machine froze after 'starting windows' with the white bar on the black screen appeared. [then nothing happened]. I did finally succeed in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and ran the Virus Scan, result no infections. [Also cleaned out all temp folders!] Bewildered???
