I am running Cognos Improptu V6.0.613.0. When I choose one of the canned reports, I see the program accessing the catalog, but when the report appears, there is no information. There is a red X on the database cylinder icon, so it appears that the catalog is not being able to access the database.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're not connecting to the database when you open the catalog. This means you are either unchecking the box that says "Connect to database" or your machine is not able to connect to the database for some reason. Either way we'll need a lot more detail, regarding what database you're using and how you're currently connecting, to be able to help.

I am what I am based on the decisions I have made.

I am using a Sybase Database and the connection is through an .ini file that tells the report program where the Database is. I have checked the .ini files and everything is pointing in the right direction. So am confused as to why I can't connect.

Try opening just you're catalog. Then go to Catalog - Connect. Put in your Database UserID and Password. If it's a problem with your userid and password, you'll get an error message stating your login was incorrect. If it's a database connection problem, you should get a different error message. If you don't get any error messages, but the red X remains, you've probably got Driver problems. Check that you are using the supported Sybase drivers for Impromptu 6.

I am what I am based on the decisions I have made.

I live and work in Bahrain, small island off the coast of Saudi Arabia. I would really like to be able to call you and talk to you about Cognos, as no one else on the island is using it and I would like to better understand how it works. Thanks for the tips. Will try them tomorrow.

I'm encountering the same problem. There is no red X but when I run the report nothing comes out. I removed any filters and checked the joins. I don't get any errors. I don't think I have any problems with the Sybase drivers since when I use on other catalogs and reports they work fine. When I try creating an ad-hoc query or a new report results come out normally.

Monsky,
You may have the retrieve rows automatically unchecked on that report. It also may be that you have a Summary Filter set. Start by checking these two suggestions.
