No Power At ALL??

I'm pretty sure I've got everything plugged in right, but no power is being supplied at all to my PC. I've tried replacing the power supply (with a 480W), but nothing, not even the fan on the power supply is turning. I've even plugged it into different outlets. I've also replaced the video card and the hard drive. Actually, correction, I guess there's SOME power, because the little green light on my LAN cable goes on, but that's it. Is the problem actually with the power supplies? Or is it possible that a problem with the motherboard would cause this type of symptom?

Did you mount the motherboard correctly? have you used too many brass standoff mounts and one is shorting the motherboard to ground.
Are the front panel wires correctly connected
What has led upto this problem, history please.

Old machine, 3 yrs old. Was working perfectly for a long time, then it started intermittently re-booting itself. I removed a bunch of spyware etc., but it still rebooted itself periodically. So I tried to reinstall XP, but it wouldn't install properly (kept on failing on copying p3.sys, the first among a whole slew of other files, most notably ntkrnlpa.exe). So I replaced the hard drive, and the exact same problem. I switched RAM. Same problem. I removed some RAM. Same problem. I changed video cards, same problem. And then suddenly, it wouldn't even power up for me to GET to that point. So I replaced the power supply, and the new one wouldn't power up either.

Faulty plug? Fuse? could be something like that, might sound simple but try it!

eh, maybe it's your power button that's broke?

how's about trying to short the jumpers for your power button?

It seems like you've changed pretty much all of your vitals, so, maybe it's the motherboard itself?

I figured out the Power problem. I disconnected all the devices from the power, and it powered up fine. So I started plugging in devices one by one, and it failed once I plugged in the floppy drive. I guess something is either wrong with the connector or the plug or something. I still get the Windows XP Install failing on p3.sys and then a whole bunch of other files though, even when I plugged in a new hard drive. Next up I guess I'll try swapping the power supply again just for kicks, although I don't think that would have anything to do with this current problem. Thanks much for your help, guys!

Hi there.

Had the same problem as you described and google brought me here. I managed to fix the problem. So thought I would register and post what I did.

p3.sys appears to be inside SP2.cab so its something to do with that. I copied p3.sys out of the cab file and put it in a folder called I386 on a blank cd, inserted this when xp got stuck, and the file copied ok. Reverted back to the XP disc and eventually got another error. To cut a long story short the SP2.cab file was not been extracted. So what you need to do is manually extract ALL of SP2.CAB to a folder called I386 and burn it to CDR.

Whenever you get a transfer error simply insert the CDR and it should then copy.

I guess an easy way arround this would be to copy all of your XP Disc to your HD, extract all of SP2.CAB to the I386 folder and then burn the entire installation back to a CDR.

I also forgot to add that you should make sure your CDR disc has the same label as your XP Disc in case it looks for that 'specific' disc.
