I am having trouble isolating the problem.

Other computers in my house have perfect internet access through my 10MB cable connection. Only my HP Desktop however, neither any PCI NICs or USB nics work faster then a couple of kilobytes per second. (all wired)

When I take it to BestBuy for warrenty service, they look at me like I am crazy because they plug it into their T1 connection and it works fine.

The wires work for other computers. The Nics work for other computers. The Computer works fine when plugged in at Bestbuy's T1 connection.

How is this possible?

My thought would be the cable you have running to that computer is bad. I would switch it with another cable.

Describe how you're checking the "couple of kilobytes per second" speed...

Try a new cable as Electronicsfreak suggested. Then try moving the PC to where one of your other machines is functioning at "normal" speed. Disconnect the other machine and use that network cable on the HP. Maybe the port on the switch that you were using for the HP is bad...

Is this machine's TCP/IP parameters set exactly the same as the others? E.g., DHCP, Obtain DNS server address automatically, etc, etc.

Thank you G0AOZ and Electronicsfreak. I have tried all your suggestions. I have three computers, three sets of cables, and 5 nics. All wires work on all computers except my HP desktop. All computers work with all NICS, but no NICS work on all with HP. Not even an external USB NIC will work on my HP. I take it to BestBuy, and the NIC works. I did a system recovery and a system restore, and tried both old and newer drivers. I reinstalled TCP/IP. I am in the twighlight zone.

Have you tried moving the HP to a network point that work with another PC as suggested by GOAOZ or even connecting it directly to your router.

Is this machine set to get it's IP address via DHCP?

You've not said, but we're assuming your router has DHCP enabled... Tell us the range of addresses that it is set to issue.

Is wireless coming into the equation here?

What happens to the HP's speed when all network cables to other machines are disconnected?

ROGER - G0AOZ.

Yes, it gets it's IP address via DHCP. All other compters get normal speed on the same cables on the same router. All wired.

try resetting the router
