Hi all I'm at my wits end, I'm hoping some of you fine people can help me please.

I'm a newbie server engineer, trying to learn as I go along. We have a vpn between two sites that is connected by 2 netgear dg834 routers (yeah I know that isn't a very good way of doing it) It had been working absolutely fine until we had to change one of the routers (it now turns out we didn't have to change the router at all in the first place!!!)

The PDC is a Win 2003 R2 Standard x64 SP2 and the BDC is Win 2003 Standard SP2, there are no other servers.

I can ping both by name and ip to both sites fine but when i go start run \\servername or \\ip address at both sites I get no network provider accepted the given network path. I first of all thought it was the routers. I have completely re-created the vpn tunnel at both ends and allowed all traffic through the firewall, but no luck. I have spoken to netgear support but I may as well have gone out and spoken to a brick wall, they were hopeless.

When i try to browse the domain I'm only seeing a few computers and it is only showing computers from one side of the network at both ends ie server A only shows some pcs belonging to that side of the network and vice versa. I have stopped and restarted the computer browser on both servers and restarted starting with the pdc then bdc. No difference. There are no errors in the system or app logs at either end.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

If you haven't changed anything on the server side of things, I would look at your VPN configuration. Is it possible that some of the necessary ports are being blocked thus causing this issue.

That was my thinking and I tried opening various ports for netbios but that completely killed the vpn. So now I have set both routers to allow all traffic through and I still have the same problem. I have also tried different versions of the same model of router at both sites but that hasn't worked either. The whole thing has been a nightmare. And I was really hacked off with the ISP yesterday when it turned out the router never needed to be changed in the first place! Is there any particular ports I could try telnetting to that would prove or disprove the traffic is getting across the vpn?
