No Network activity

I have a co-workers computer that I am trying to repair for him, he is on Dial-up at his home with this computer so to help assist my needs I installed an SMC NIC on this machine, installed fine, but I am unable to access the internet, I have checked and double checked all my settings that I know of.

Need some help fellas!

OS - WinME
Connection - No router, straight from the cable modem.

Can you ping the localhost (127.0.0.1)?

Yes I have. and it can ping the local host.

What's the OS? What about ipconfig /all? Anything? Can you access a web site by means of a ip address?

It is set to use DHCP. The OS is WinME. in which I couldn't remember the commands for cmd. I didn't try using a IP but, I wasn't getting any activity by pinging anything outside the local host.

instead of cmd: command.com

instead of ipcongig: winipcfg

at least check there if you got an IP adress from your provider.

No firewalls running that block ICMP (PING) packets?
