Once again hours wasted on a stupid linux problem. I have Redhat 7.2, I installed netcape 6.x whatever the newest release is. The program works fine, but in order to run it I have to go into the director /usr/local/netscape and run the netscape shell script, wich executes with the pop up box and takes about 30 seconds to launch.

I searched the whole hard drive. There is no other way to launch netscape. There is no other icon or file to launch.

I should be spending type configuring apache, but once again the ugly head of linux shows itself and wasts more of my time.

What went wrong?

Blame AOL/Netscape - install the latest Mozilla. It's more stable and will come as a redhat rpm file.

For that splash screen, check out the command:

netscape -no-about-splash

or to get rid of the registration splash - in the file defaults/pref/all-ns.js:

'pref("browser.registration.enable", true)'
to
'pref("browser.registration.enable", false)'

Any launch icon - whether on panels or menus - is similar to the MS world - a link in a file pointing to that same executable. If the netscape installer didn't add one - pop a shortcut or command line in yourself.

Hi,

As far as I know, Redhat decided they would not ship any netscape 6.x rpms - only mozilla itself, i.e. the codebase used by netscape 6.x without all the commercial irritations. They still include Netscape 4.78 in RH 7.2 complete with desktop link, however.

If you really want netscape 6.x itself, do as Norwich says - just create your own icon. You can right-click on the gnome tool bar and do 'add launcher' for this. Just put the path you normally type at the shell prompt - there may not be a 'proper' icon but thats not too important if the button itself works.

Regards
