Hi everybody - I did a command line update last week as I upgraded the shell. I usually check via telnet once in awhile. I like doing updates via the cli as I can see the progress of things as they are installed.

I tried to do an update today, and the shell wouldn't let me run it. After I typed the update command, it asked for the admin password, which I put in. It said that I couldn't execute the command as root on the system. Not sure if other people were having this problem.

We ran into this, too. Turns out EMT just implemented upgrades to their software update procedure. One thing they added is the ability to schedule updates. One thing they disabled is updates via the CLI. I imagine they did this because of how easy it is to corrupt a kernel when you're doing updates via CLI (ask me how I know). The web GUI doesn't show you progress, but it also keeps running if your network connection to the UCx drops/flickers, unlike the CLI method.

Thanks SenorWatsonSan for the heads up - much appreciated. I remember that EMT always suggested using the GUI for regular updates and CLI for kernel updates. Have they now transitioned to kernel updates via the GUI? Just wondering if the GUI will now be able to update the kernel as well. It would be nice if they could somehow show some kind of progress on the updates or perhaps show the cli commands as the updates process through the GUI. We had some issues with the update process hanging via the GUI awhile ago, and I never knew where we were in the process unless I looked at the update logs. Oh well. If that's what we gotta do, that's what we'll do then. :)

In the News window on the Dashboard, E-MetroTel provided a link to the following notice:

With this new implementation, you can check the progress of a running update by going to Support - Log Files and select the swupdate.log. It's not the same as running it from the command line, but at least something.

Kernel updates could always be done (as far as I remember) from the GUI and E-MetroTel recommended using the GUI to make sure the updates would not get interrupted (by users closing their window, the loss of network connection, etc.).

Yes, kernel updates have always been done via the GUI. The parts that used to require the CLI were the SQL and the HTTP portions of the server. Now it's all GUI.

I've seen what you mean with the web GUI hanging during an update. Normally I just walk away from them for 30 mins or so and then refresh on the support log's "swupdate" section for a readout.
