I have a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 5000) with an LT WinModem running Win2000. I even got the new Maintenance Release. For some reason I can't get the modem sound to work. Dell tech support walked me through all the standard checks, and then a senior tech tells me that there is a bug in Win2K that doesn't work with modems using the LT chipset, even though it is listed as compatible. Anyone else hear of this? Microsoft's web site doesn't mention this excpet for a Gateway laptop modem that is still under investigation.

Hi Kenhamady,
Do you want the sounds or not? Check the volume on your modem settings. That maybe set to low, or the volume on your laptop.
Don't let them get away with it! Make them solve the problem. Sometime techs get lazy and don't want to help. Try calling again and tell the to take the modem back if they can't get it to work and give you a different one. Sorry to say but some techs are just plain lazy! Senior or not. You should get what you pay for!

Good luck. [sig][/sig]

bobleona,

I wish it were that easy. The technicians and I tried every setting. All other sounds work fine, just not the modem.

I escalated 3 levels with Dell phone tech support. I was told that becuase the modem connected and operated correctly, they would not replace it simply becuase I couldn't hear the tones. I threatened to return the entire PC and they would have taken it, but I like the PC otherwise and don't want to make good on the threat.

What really bugged me was that the technician s wouldn't document anything in writing about the &quot;known&quot; problem. Not even email me that it was a known problem with Windows or LT Winmodems. Obviously this isn't a well known issue.

So, I started over with Email tech support (here everything is in writing). I haven't heard anything from them about there being a known problem with the LT ChipSet. They have told me that I may need to reinstall the OS, and that this may fix the problem. The guy assured me that he has seen this fix the problem. But they are still mushy about what the problem really is. Sounds like they don't know.

Thanks anyway, [sig]<p>Ken Hamady<br><a href=mailto:ken@kenhamady.com>ken@kenhamady.com</a><br><a href= Reports Training by Ken Hamady</a><br>[/sig]

kenhamady,

Is your modem supports sound, then there is some sort of driver problem. Is your modem type supported by windows 2000? &quot;
If it is on the hardware compatibility list. Then DELL isn't doing thier job.

Maybe take it to another tech. See what your warrantee agreement states. &quot;normally if your tech don't open the case. The warantee will still be honored.&quot;
Please check first.

Bobleona,

Thanks, for the encouragement.

According to Microsoft's site, it is a supported modem. Today Dell told me NOT to bother with the OS, since it isn't likely to solve the problem. I guess this is what the bleeding edge is like. I will probably just live with it, since I don't want to return the PC. Maybe someone will solve the driver problem someday.

Here is the last message from Dell, if anyone is interested:

Q: Does this mean that this is a problem that effects all of these laptops, in which case I should stop wasting time trying
to fix it.
A: It can possibly affect all systems but seems to be random and hard to track down.

Q: How long do you think it will take to solve this problem, and what am I supposed to do in the meantime.
A: I apologize but I have no ETA. My technical supervisors advised me that it was being looked into and did not have this information.

Q: How can I track the progress of the solution?
A: If it turns out to be a driver problem then You can find these files on our website. Go to and you can either put your service tag in so that it will give you a list for you to pick what you need or you can search for a file using keywords or exact filenames. If it is not a driver issue then it is likely to show up in a article in the Dell Knowledge base. [sig]<p>Ken Hamady- href= Reports Training by Ken Hamady</a><br>[/sig]

Well, I can tell you it is not an issue specific to the LT (Lucent) WinModem. I have a Compaq Armada E500 with the LT WinModem and can get sounds.

Try this if you haven't already. Open the volume controls, go to Options/Properties and under Playback see if you have the choice for Phone In. This is the volume control for the modem...at least in my case. By default it is muted.

That is the problem.

I have a &quot;phone line&quot; setting under recording but no phone in (or out) under playback. All controls are visible and nothing is muted.

Any reason I would be missing that control? Is there anyway to compare drivers?

I applied the Win2000 SP but that did nothing, so I removed it.

Are you using native W2K drivers for the WinModem or drivers from Dell/Lucent?

If you are using Native Drivers you may want to try the generic 5.75 drivers from Lucent >>>>>>

If you have drivers from Dell, what version are they?
