I recently purchased a laptop from a friend who is not too computer literate. He told me it had a dvd/cd-rw drive. So I go over and check out the unit, he has win 98se installed, I open media player and it recognizes the burner. So, I'm sold. I bring it home, re-format the drive and install XP professional. All of sudden, the drive is only a DVD-ROM. I've tried a couple burning programs, but none recognize the drive as a cd-rw. I've checked the net regarding the model of computer and they all say it's supposed to be a combo drive. It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 @ 850mhz, 256MB RAM, and 30GB hard drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it is a cdrw i would expect to have "rewritable" or "recordable" stamped on the front of the tray, also the "DVD" logo, for a combo.

If you go into My Computer and right click the drive do you see a Recording tab? XP has writting ability and the Recording tab should be there if the drive is a CD-RW.

Also is the BIOS up to date and did you check Toshiba's site for XP drivers?
