I have a 8616GTE in my Passport 8600 and I'm trying to trunk it to a WS-X5234 in my Catalyst 5500 (link the new Nortel network to the old Cisco gear for testing). I've got a sigle port connected with a single crossover cable, but I'm not getting any link. I know the port is good and the cable is good, as I can connect the Passport 8600 to a BayStack 5510-48T using the same cable & port.

I've worked around this by connecting 8608GBE with a 1000baseSX GBIC to my WS-X5550, also with a 1000baseSX GBIC. However, I want to know - am I going mad or shouldn't this "just work"?

is autoneg any option ?

Check if PP8600 have autoneg disable, or enable.. or if there is a option. I don't remeber..

If there is no option the port is 1000 full, and then you need to check the cisco switch for the same..

Auto - Full = failer.

Here is the nortel config (I believe it's auto), followed by the Cisco config. What I can't find is how to pin the nortel interface to 100/full. I have experience with Cisco, so I know I can do that.

Try using a standard straight through cable. Get everyon working at 100/full. Cisco does not like to auto-negotiate with non-Cisco devices.

Aha! I've already tried that. I connected a different port on the PP8600 to a different Cat5500, and still no dice. To disable autoneg, I did this:

Nortel:
config ethernet 2/3 auto-negotiate disable

Cisco:
set port speed 12/5 100
set port duplex 12/5 full

I've also tried to do this on the crossover cable as well.

How do I pin the speed on the Nortel side?

Thanks,
Tony

P.S. Not that I think it matters, but a slight correction. The crossover is plugged into a Cisco WS-X5225R blade while the straight through is plugged into a Cisco WS-X5234 blade. They are both coming from the 8616GTE in my PP8600.

Please clarify if you are trying to connect a Nortel 8616GTE 1000Tx port to a Cisco 100Tx port because if you are it can't be done since the 8616GTE is ONLY 1000Tx.

Previous Nortel to Cisco GIG connection experience was over 1000Sx which we eventually got to work by playing with various flow control / duplex options.

oh. Oh. OH. OHHHHHH.

Yes, yes - it is a 8616GTE. Somehow I thought it was a 10/100/1000 blade for the PP8600. Since it is just 1000, that explains EVERYTHING.

Ok, I'll go back to figuring out how to make this work.

Thanks!!
Tony
