I have an XP machine that is unable to connect to the internet. I have tried installing different browsers, different cables and still no internet. The light blinks green on back of the lan card and I am able to connect to a shared hard drive on my network. I tried using a winsock fix software and after it tells me to reboot, I still have the same issue. Anybody have any other thoughts on how to fix this besides reinstalling the OS.
Thanks

Hi

Can other programs ( instant messenger, file sharing, software update, FTP, telnet, SSH, anything ) connect through the internet ?

If yes, then tell us what browsers you tried.

If no, then your problem is a generic one, not browser related. You will get better answers in one of the Windows forums.

Feherke.

I am using both Firefox and IE7. I tried under different profiles also with no success. I havent tried pining yet. I will try that now.

3 possibilities worth checking.

Malware. Of some kind. Check that c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts isn't corrupt as well.

Firewall issues - check especially that port 80 isn't blocked.

Check for the possibility that some required service isn't running as it should. I can't image what but compare running services with a machine that is working normally.

i have the same problem ie/firefox can not load the page after a few minutes of surfing. the only solution is the reboot. But msn and skype working fine
i tried spyware search but no answer.
Windows Firewall is off

You could also try updating the NIC drivers or even replace the NIC card as it could be a duff one.

my NIC is onboard, and my mainboard update is ok.
Also since i can use msn or skype NIC card should be workin properly. My only issue is browser's losin connection in a few minutes of surfing

If you have another NIC card you can try, it would be worth disabling the onboard NIC and trying it out.

I have seen these type of symptoms resolved by changing the NIC.

If the symptoms persist with another NIC then you know that you have a software issue and can concentrate on looking for Malware, driver or configuration problems. If a new NIC solves the problem then you know the onboard NIC is either bad - or has a driver problem. So you could try rolling the driver back.

do an IPconfig /all from the command prompt and check your settings there.. does the computer possibly have a modem or do you have access to a modem and a dialup account to try? or maybe a cell phone and a data cable? that might help you narrow down to whether its a problem with the network port or not.. have you checked to see if there is a proxy configured possibly for some reason?
