No Internet, but can ping outside 1

First problem! Am a mechanical engineer assignned the task of setting up a server!
Second problem - Have 2003 DS setup as AD, DNS, DHCP, File, and Printer server. Internet connection is thru Smoothwall (software on seperate box) into common switch (Tried replacing with a Linksys router, had same results). I can ping internet sites by name or address from any machine, but cannot open pages unless I setup a client directly to the Smoothwall box seperate from the 2003 server. As soon as I connect the server (even on a seperate NIC on the client) I loose the ability to open pages. Oddly enough, one user with AOL loaded on a client can open pages. And all can recieve email thru outlook/express from Hotmail, Juno, etc.

Open to any ideas! Everybody wants it now!

Have you ensured the following settings are correct in each user's Internet Explorer...

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Connections tab
3. LAN Settings...

Yes, I believe. Lan Settings/Automatically Detect Settings/OK/OK

Try removing Auto Detect Settings and restarting Internet Explorer.

If you have DNS set up on that new server, then you need to set up "Forwarders" in the DNS to your ISP or to the "default gateway" in order to resolve internet names (websites).

To Do this: right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage" then select "DNS" and expand downward until you see the server_name. Right-click the server_name and select "Properties". One of the tabs will be labled "Forwarders" click it. Type in the IP Address of your ISP or default gateway and click "Add" button.

Added Forwarder and tried the Smoothwall IP, ISP "gateway", and my internet IP provided by my ISP. All with no change.

In reading other info I did a nslookup and it came back with an error of:

DNS Request timed out.
Timeout was 2 seconds.
Can't find server name for address (my dns server IP): Timed Out.
Address: (my dns server IP)

I thought this might indicate a problem with the dns configuration.
