We had a power outage during the night, which resulted in no external email being sent from our Exchange box and no incoming email. We managed to get the external email to be sent to the outside world, however we cannot receive any email!

I have checked the Exchange logs and can see that external IP addresses have contacted us (I take it these are incoming emails). I have also checked the Firewall - not problem there!

Any assistance would be very welcome and a solution will get a beer or two!!

try some telnet tests from outside the network into the email server on pop & smtp ports, that might give some indication if there are networking or firewall issues...

Thanks for the email.

We can Telnet into the IMC and successfully send an email.

However, this is done by using the IP address? Since emailers use the DNS name, I guess this suggests there is something wrong with the DNS???

Still confused!

1st. Thanks to all who replied.

All services were fine and started correctly - no errors in the event logs.

I could Telnet into the IMS on Exchange from an external source, so I investigated the DNS - seems our ISP had changed our mail server DNS entry - coincidence or what! Needless to say I was livid, but also very releived when they changed ot back and email started coming in!

Again many thanks.
